Good grief. Sorry but leagues need to stay separate.

    I saw this today.
I'd always heard the Negro Leagues didn't keep good records so no one knew exactly how many HRs Josh Gibson hit.
Did they suddenly find the records after so many years?

How can you be the record holder in a league you never played in?

I would think the same. Then I read this, suggesting that ship might have sailed a long time ago.

“A special committee on baseball records decided in 1969 to recognize six major leagues dating to 1876: the National (which launched in 1876), the American (1901), the American Association (1882-1891), Union Association (1884), Players' League (1890) and Federal League (1914-1915). It excluded the National Association (1871-75), citing an "erratic schedule and procedures."”

MLB adds Negro Leagues stats, stirs record books

CFL players are allowed to play in the NFL if are good enough. Many of the players in the negro leagues were more than good enough but weren’t allowed because of racism. So agree or disagree with the approach, but they are trying to right a historical wrong with this.

You dont just add numbers from one league to another. My comments have zero to do with race or if he was a great player. Why do you suppose D3 RBs stats are seperate from D1.?

Again, because D3 is an inferior league to D1. If they were good enough to play in D1 they would have.
These guys weren’t allowed to play because of what was still an overtly racist society. Because we will never truly know how they would have compared, this is the atonement offered from MLB. Folks can agree or disagree with this approach for valid reasons, but trying to right a historical wrong is a good thing imo.

    In sports - Why?

    To make someone feel better?

How does the record holder who just lost his record feel?

There were many great players in the Negro League that don't get their do because they couldn't play in the Majors. Josh Gibson is one. If he was allowed to play in the majors he would have been a bigger star than Jackie Robinson. He would be up there with the best of the best.

Somehow we need to celebrate that.

No problem with that but i compare it to Vernon Maxwell. He scored all those points.you cant change what actually happend. Gibson, Paige etc. Would have done great in the big leagues. Would they have tne same numbets, doesnt matter, they may have but they didnt get the chance. Im sorr but you are punishing those whom records they surpass based on a different league.
