That is entirely consistent with his idea of "freedom."

I know I overuse this, but 16 had it right

The world has never had a good definition of liberty, and the American people, just now, are much in need of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.
With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name — liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names — liberty and tyranny.
The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty, especially as the sheep was a black one. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails today among us human creatures, even in the North, and all professing to love liberty. Hence we behold the processes by which thousands are daily passing from under the yoke of bondage, hailed by some as the advance of liberty, and bewailed by others as the destruction of all liberty.

DeSantis believes in the liberty of the wolf

When he was Gov. Ric Scott forbade state agencies from including the words climate change in any reports or oral presentations. I remember a state senator (D) torturing some state employee during an environmental hearing asking one leading question after another where the obvious answer was climate change and getting a chuckle at alternative words offered up.

This kind of thing is straight out of 1984. Eliminate inconvenient words and ideas.

ooooh, here it is. Flat out funny and it went on for questions by multiple senators. Also some Fox spin.

And the mention of a DEP employee being suspended for refusing to remove the magic words from his report did happen.

I agree that is why I responded to a stupid article from The Onion and upset all you children. If we had a "barf," "creepy" or "yuck" emoji one could just use it instead of responding to foolery from The Onion.

Ft. Lauderdale police shot a BLM protester in the eye socket with a rubber bullet and then lied and said an officer was under attack. In reality, they were just doing what police always do, state violence against black protesters.

The lies are being exposed, but it will make no difference. I am sure a majority of the state population, and especially the Governor, approve of what the police did. The protests really angered them

Latest article about the pettiness of our Florida governor.

    https://floridaphoenix.com/2024/05/...m-fl-law-desantis-shows-hes-living-in-denial/

“Gov. Ron DeSantis is an addict. Not to drugs, but to fossil fuels. He’s showing all the signs, but nobody has had the guts to call it what it is.

“You doubt me? Look at what he did last week.

“DeSantis signed a bill that deletes most of the mentions of climate change from state law. He did this even as most of South Florida faced record high temperatures.”

    Absorbing this, but never overlook

Along with the in-person training, the Florida Department of Education offered a 50-hour online civics training. Teachers who successfully completed the online training received a $3,000 bonus.

They are not the majority, even on the Right. But they do have some much money behind them, along with a zeal to power. So they exercise disproportionate influence

The best way to show that you will stand up for all viewpoints is to officially sanction one specific viewpoint that has a sordid history of documented racism and Islamophobia, blast it with a 10000 watt amp to an audience that will include people who don't like racism and Islamophobia, and then withhold degrees from the tiny segment that actually vocalized their disagreement. That is tolerance of diversity!!

FTR, in case you are just jonesing to see what yet another old white billionaire codger (who is also milking this very college for all its worth) had to say, the transcript follows. If you just want the summary, here it is:
    • Fourth sentence: "The graduation speakers stand at their podiums and talk a lot about themselves, but we ought to talk about you, the graduating students."
    • The next 2300 words: Ricketts' life story, starting from school and running all the way up to a gratuitous pitch of "Ricketts Great Book College", which costs SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS per semester.
    • Four sentences from the end: "For that reason, I want to end this speech by offering my heartfelt congratulations to the graduates of 2024. I wish you good luck as you head out on your own."

They are going to have to start erecting huge signs on the interstate highways coming into the state listing words/phrases on the verboten list.
