KC Chiefs kicker complains about "emasculation of men," gay pride & says women should be homemakers

Few years back went to a Florence and the Machine concert in Orlando with my wife. We both rolled our eyes a bit as she went on for several minutes about toxic masculinity which can be interpreted in any number of ways I imagine.

Not comparing it to a commencement speech in any way but we just continued watching the show and enjoyed the music. We knew where we were and it wasn't a big deal. I understand taking exception to certain things in life but for the most part we don't concern ourselves with celebrity or athlete'sopinions. That's not to say we aren't respectful of others and open to introspection and growth but joining in on mass outrage over rando events just seems pointless. Then again, here I am on a message board.....

 

I went out and bought Florence's jersey after that speech. Anyways, what about this experience was "emasculating?" Is it entertainment that is doing the emasculating? I'm trying to think about a guy who went to Lilith Fair in the 90s and was like "what's the deal with all this chick shit?"

 

I mean it wasn't? But I'm sure if someone decided to make a big deal out of it the masses would still be arguing about it weeks later...

 

You responded to a post wondering who was doing the emasculating by telling that story. If it wasn't, what were you responding to?

 

Jeezus man I responded to a post asking where the emasculation was coming from. I imagine the same people crying about emasculation would have been bothered by her "toxic masculinity " rant although they most likely wouldn't be at her show to begin with. There is room to debate that though depending on the her definition of toxic masculinity. For that matter, what defines masculinity?

 

So you are imagining a person feeling emasculated by a performance they didn't attend? Its one thing to disagree with someone's message, its another to claim it metaphorically severed your penis. I dont see many people saying Butker made them feel like they were symbolically castrated or made them feel like less than men, quite the opposite, they are mostly just making fun of a football idiot who opened his mouth.

In response to the posts about Americans needing to learn Mandarin, I have no reason to believe Chinese men are more masculine than American men, whatever that means. The fact that China outnumbers us by over a billion people seems significant though.

 

Well, what does it mean to you ?

 

I don't have military training or education, but seems like unfavorable numbers to the extent the poster who's fearful of Chinese men is thinking about a ground invasion as opposed to both sides pressing buttons.

 

American fears of China (or anyone else) invading the U.S. are markedly effeminate.

Eddie Vedder became the latest to join the chorus of voices disagreeing with the athlete's misogynistic remarks, drawing cheers from the audience.

"I get that it could be for some people. There should be pride in homemaking, if you're a man or a woman. It's maybe one of the hardest jobs, and you should definitely take pride in it," Vedder said. "But you're going to benefit by giving up your dreams? I couldn't understand the logic, so I'm questioning it in public right now."

Vedder then took aim at Butker directly, telling the crowd, "The irony was that this football player — well, kicker… You see, the kicker doesn't have the pads because he doesn't tackle anybody or get tackled. But he started telling men, 'Don't forget to puff up your chest and be more masculine. Don't lose your masculinity.' The irony was that when he was saying that, he looked like such a .............."

My first reaction is Vedder seems to be promoting (perhaps unintentionally) sexist stereotypes by calling a man a p---- to insult him and to question his masculinity....thereby reducing masculinity to being about physical strength/violence? I don't know anything about Vedder, but my guess is that he wouldn't want to line up against or fight Butker.

 

Yeah, this is a keen observation. I feel like the same sort of "toxic masculinity" (for lack of a better word) exists on the other side of the culture wars, it just manifests in other ways. I see it here on this forum, and am probably guilty of it myself sometimes. I feel like many women understand this, but its lost on men, who are just trapped in the doom loop of patriarchy.

Both your post and Big Cypress's showcase a point women have made for years. A man who insults or maligns another man using vulgar sexist or misogynist language indirectly insults all women.

The insulting admonition 'don't get your panties in a wad' is also demeaning and sexist language. How could those crass phrases not be when they are used by men to insult other men by comparing them to women.
