JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox was arrested in Florida as part of an underage sëx sting, authorities announced Monday.
Maddox was one of 27 people arrested as part of a multi-agency operation late last month, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said. They are accused of soliciting sëx over the internet from people who they believed were children, officials said.

James Hill, a defense attorney for Maddox, said he intends to fight the allegations against him and will enter a plea of not guilty should formal charges be filed.
Maddox, 33, began communicating with an undercover agent pretending to be an underage girl on April 28, an arrest report said. He expressed his intent to have sëx with the girl even after she told him that she was 14, officials said.

Maddox agreed to meet the girl at a pre-arranged location, where he was arrested by law enforcement officers, authorities said. He is charged with four felony counts, including traveling to meet after using a computer to solicit a child. He is being held in jail on a $300,000 bond.

Maddox played college ball for the University of Florida and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2012. He made his major league debut with the team in 2017 after several years in the minors. He spent about three months on the Red Sox roster before heading back to the minors to recover from shoulder injuries. He was released from the team in 2019.

Child predators are the scum of society. Glad they busted him and the rest of those creeps.

As with the "To Catch A Predator" show, there is always a question of would any of these people doing this if they weren't basically goaded into by someone doing an entrapment scheme? I guess the cops cant really go after the 'Epstein Island' crowd, so they set up elaborate stings to bust the dumbest guys imaginable.

Are they goaded into it or is the adult male predator the one that takes the initiative?

This is pretty close to busting thought crimes IMO. Certainly there are people that harbor dark fantasies, whether its violence or sex. Maybe they even talk about them online. But like with a lot of the FBI "terrorism" entrapment schemes or hitman hiring stings, you basically have a cop telling people they can make their fantasies come true and telling them they can supply them with everything they need to make them reality, psychologically breaking down the natural barriers that would prevent people from acting. I would say in almost all cases, none of these people would take all the steps themselves if not presented with the opportunity, and basically the only people around to present them with an opportunity are cops playing pretend. I posted in another thread data about how cops dont spend much time actually fighting crime, but doing "proactive" policing, which is basically just doing flimsy pretextual traffic stops (usually targeting minorities). I would add this type of thing to the list, you have cops out there trying to "create" crime instead of stopping crime that is happening. But this is what comes with bloated budgets, make work jobs for cops.

The facts are, most child sex crimes are against family members and/or perpetrated by people already known by the victim (hence the term "grooming"), not a strange child you pick up on the internet for a one-off sex encounter

Anyone doing this to minors should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Scum of the earth.

Stop making excuses. Entrapment? Did anyone force the guy to communicate online. The answer is no. As with most of these perverts, they use the web as a way to stalk their prey. What the hell is wrong with people. Any grown man who agrees to meet with an under-age female, whether it's valid or not, is a scumbag, period, end of story.

I wonder the same about people who want to put even more people in jail simply for thinking/talking about bad things. Arent we just creating crime here ? Isnt there real crime for cops to work on? There arent enough prisons to put all the scumbags away to make people who hate freedom safe, I promise. This is what cops do with too much money, they have to make cases for them to arrest people for.

Beyond the obvious immorality …how stupid do you have to be? With all the attention these stings have gotten … “hey, here’s a cute 16-year-old girl on the internet who wants to have sex with me! What could go wrong?”

Indeed, I don't think we are busting scumbags so much as the dumbest people online. Like if you arent skeptical that a person who presents themselves as 20, 30, 40 whatever who is aggressively asking for sex online is legit, maybe you shouldnt operate heavy machinery.

I 100% guarantee we will see these type of entrapment schemes with abortion in the future

The official ones with law enforcement may be different. The undercover investigations I've seen conducted by private groups vary on the details. I'm sure some are less aggressive than others because they want their work to stick and to avoid the entrapment argument (even if the word "entrapment" doesn't technically apply to private groups).

One of the most popular ones you can find on YT by searching PP Southeast Texas. The guy behind it is Alex Rosen. He's weird but better at cross examination than a lot of lawyers.

Here's what I've seen happen the most: The decoy has an account with a young looking pic and a fake (adult) age, and the decoy follows or likes the man's account. (This is the part that I think is arguably the most problematic). The man sends the first communication, and the decoy says their profile is untrue and asks if it's a problem that they're not really 27 but actually 13. The men turn the conversation sexual after they acknowledge the age of the decoy. They will later claim they thought it was role playing, they were being catfished, or claim they only wanted to meet with the kid to warn them of the danger of talking to men online. Those contentions are significantly undermined by the fact that the men are asking questions about when the parents are around, talking about the kids' school, etc.

Many men send nudes or explicit material and talk about what they want to do with the kids. Once they show up at the meeting spot, the "catcher" implies that if the man is simply honest, the private group won't have to involve the cops. (This could be another issue if the man were to admit things that weren't actually true just to get out of the situation). They then tell the men they're just out to catch the really bad guys/big fish who are making CSAM and hurting kids as young as babies. At that point, many of the men agree to "help" and admit to viewing and trading CSAM and acknowledging they need to delete some illegal material they still have saved. At that point, the cops are called and where it goes from there depends on the procedures of the law enforcement department. I've seen quite a few men who already had convictions for CSAM or sexual battery on a real child in the past.

If I recall, basically none of the people busted on the Chris Hansen predator show were able to be prosecuted.

Would have to look that up. I read that they got convictions but I'm sure they lost some too depending upon how they handled things. I also read the show was cancelled at least partly because they caught an assistant DA who committed suicide when they tried to arrest him at home.

If any woman of any age tries to contact me for sex, I'd assume I'm being set up. I'd be suspicious if my wife flirted with me.

But what if it's a Nigerian princess who needs your help to free her fortune? You know she'd be extremely grateful.
