Unfortunately, I don't know any nuns, but one of my closest friends is a Franciscan Friar and ordained Priest. I sent him the story and awaiting his thoughts. He's quite apolitical and hadn't heard of it. He's probably been busy teaching kids or helping feed the poor or some other such nonsense.

 

Imo nuns are one of the more pious groups there is.

Fruit? Stop. The Catholic Church is comprised of over 1 Billion ppl. A couple of that billion succeeding in American politics doesn't mean the Church is flawed. Put it this way - they're @#%^&!'d up bc they're politicians, and in spite of their Catholicity, not because of their Catholicity.

Their holy book expressly calls for the conversion or killing of 'infidels', which is expressly defined to include all non-asherents to the Islamic faith;

Entire nations who are exclusively and expressly under muslin rule, regularly exercise and enforce the above;

Where and when ever they have numbers/ control, their level of intolerance for infidels dissipates until it disappears;

Many Islamic states, by virtue of their faith, openly call for and openly seek, the actual elimination of the Jewish stste, and actual extermination of the Jews...


...none of which--in fact nothing even remotely approaching this--applies to the Catholic Church.

So no, your assumption would be completely unfounded.

 

Yesterday on another thread I short sightedly commented on an isolated portion of the commencement address, as it related to me. I confess I had not read the text or watched the video. A mistake on my part. I may agree with some of Butker's comments about the rewards and satisfactions found in choosing to be a homemaker rather than having a career path, but do not share the same views on other topics he also addressed. I do not think it necessary to state my objections on this thread. I leave that to others.

Reading the text of the Benedictine address I learned Butker had given the commencement address at Georgia Tech in 2023. My curiosity led me to search for that speech to contrast or compare the two and I found a YouTube video. It is heavily edited but he does mention his marriage and family after the 3 minute mark. A mild warm up for the next year's address to the 2024 Benedictine grads.

 

Okay, it's time to be specific so please do us the courtesy of detailing what 'he' is doing that is the antithesis of the teaching of Jesus and the Bible.

Please elaborate for those of us who don't know what is in your mind when you refer to "the teaching of Jesus and the Bible"? Jesus taught many things, all mentioned in greater detail in the Bible. What is the Pope doing that is the antithesis of what Jesus taught?

 

Butker could have done worse. Instead of giving a speech he could have just sang the old Bobby Bare song, "Dropkick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life."

Didn’t Obergefell apply to same-sex marriage, not public accommodation?

My understanding is that there is no federal protected class of sexual orientation in public accommodation. The Colorado Baker was punished under Colorado statute which did contain sexual orientation as one of the non-discrimination classes.

The statue also considered “Creed” a protected class and Colorado law defines Creed to include “sincerely-held moral and ethical beliefs as to what is right and wrong, and/or addresses ultimate ideas or questions regarding the meaning of existence.”

I could see certain groups, as detestable as they are, arguing that their racial beliefs are ultimate ideas on the meaning of existence.

 

Earlier in the thread a few posts mentioned Chick Fil A and their support of anti-Gay ministries. I have not followed developments in the intervening years since that information became public. But the references brought to mind the friendship that was forged between Dan Cathy and Shane Windmeyer, director of Campus Pride, when Cathy reached out to the man.

Yes, after months of personal phone calls, text messages and in-person meetings, I am coming out in a new way, as a friend of Chick-fil-A's president and COO, Dan Cathy, and I am nervous about it. I have come to know him and Chick-fil-A in ways that I would not have thought possible when I first started hearing from LGBT students about their concerns over the chicken chain's giving practices.

On Aug. 10, 2012, in the heat of the controversy, I got a surprise call from Dan Cathy. He had gotten my cell phone number from a mutual business contact serving campus groups. I took the call with great caution. He was going to tear me apart, right? Give me a piece of his mind? Turn his lawyers on me?

The first call lasted over an hour, and the private conversation led to more calls the next week and the week after. Dan Cathy knew how to text, and he would reach out to me as new questions came to his mind. This was not going to be a typical turn of events.
