    Unfortunately, I don't know any nuns, but one of my closest friends is a Franciscan Friar and ordained Priest. I sent him the story and awaiting his thoughts. He's quite apolitical and hadn't heard of it. He's probably been busy teaching kids or helping feed the poor or some other such nonsense.

    You can believe whatever you want. State Bans on Abortion Throughout Pregnancy
    29 states + D.C. either have no bans at all or 18 weeks+ So, most states have more liberal abortion laws than the EU.
    I get it. It's the most blessed sacrament of the Left's religion. Woe to anyone who is not on board.

    So multiple states with 6 week or less restrictions is okay with you? Women's rights to Healthcare is not a left thing. OBGYN's leaving states and leaving women with inadequate healthcare is not a left thing.

    Fruit? Stop. The Catholic Church is comprised of over 1 Billion ppl. A couple of that billion succeeding in American politics doesn't mean the Church is flawed. Put it this way - they're @#%^&!'d up bc they're politicians, and in spite of their Catholicity, not because of their Catholicity.

    ....and again I remind--no international or even national organization or group has held the line more steadfastly than the Catholic Church.

    Identify the Protestant denomination you think has done so more effectively, consistently or steadfastly, than the Cats--and while we're at it, shall we also analyze their "fruits"?

    Can I assume you feel the same way about the muslim faith?

    You would be assuming incorrectly.

    Their holy book expressly calls for the conversion or killing of 'infidels', which is expressly defined to include all non-asherents to the Islamic faith;

    Entire nations who are exclusively and expressly under muslin rule, regularly exercise and enforce the above;

    Where and when ever they have numbers/ control, their level of intolerance for infidels dissipates until it disappears;

    Many Islamic states, by virtue of their faith, openly call for and openly seek, the actual elimination of the Jewish stste, and actual extermination of the Jews...

    ...none of which--in fact nothing even remotely approaching this--applies to the Catholic Church.

    So no, your assumption would be completely unfounded.

    Yesterday on another thread I short sightedly commented on an isolated portion of the commencement address, as it related to me. I confess I had not read the text or watched the video. A mistake on my part. I may agree with some of Butker's comments about the rewards and satisfactions found in choosing to be a homemaker rather than having a career path, but do not share the same views on other topics he also addressed. I do not think it necessary to state my objections on this thread. I leave that to others.

    Reading the text of the Benedictine address I learned Butker had given the commencement address at Georgia Tech in 2023. My curiosity led me to search for that speech to contrast or compare the two and I found a YouTube video. It is heavily edited but he does mention his marriage and family after the 3 minute mark. A mild warm up for the next year's address to the 2024 Benedictine grads.

    Okay, it's time to be specific so please do us the courtesy of detailing what 'he' is doing that is the antithesis of the teaching of Jesus and the Bible.

    Please elaborate for those of us who don't know what is in your mind when you refer to "the teaching of Jesus and the Bible"? Jesus taught many things, all mentioned in greater detail in the Bible. What is the Pope doing that is the antithesis of what Jesus taught?

    Butker could have done worse. Instead of giving a speech he could have just sang the old Bobby Bare song, "Dropkick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life."

    Didn’t Obergefell apply to same-sex marriage, not public accommodation?

    My understanding is that there is no federal protected class of sexual orientation in public accommodation. The Colorado Baker was punished under Colorado statute which did contain sexual orientation as one of the non-discrimination classes.

    The statue also considered “Creed” a protected class and Colorado law defines Creed to include “sincerely-held moral and ethical beliefs as to what is right and wrong, and/or addresses ultimate ideas or questions regarding the meaning of existence.”

    I could see certain groups, as detestable as they are, arguing that their racial beliefs are ultimate ideas on the meaning of existence.

    Earlier in the thread a few posts mentioned Chick Fil A and their support of anti-Gay ministries. I have not followed developments in the intervening years since that information became public. But the references brought to mind the friendship that was forged between Dan Cathy and Shane Windmeyer, director of Campus Pride, when Cathy reached out to the man.

    Dan and Me: My Coming Out as a Friend of Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A

    I spent New Year's Eve at the red-blooded, all-American epicenter of college football: at the Chick-fil-A Bowl, next to Dan Cathy, as his personal guest. It was among the most unexpected moments of my life.

    Yes, after months of personal phone calls, text messages and in-person meetings, I am coming out in a new way, as a friend of Chick-fil-A's president and COO, Dan Cathy, and I am nervous about it. I have come to know him and Chick-fil-A in ways that I would not have thought possible when I first started hearing from LGBT students about their concerns over the chicken chain's giving practices.

    On Aug. 10, 2012, in the heat of the controversy, I got a surprise call from Dan Cathy. He had gotten my cell phone number from a mutual business contact serving campus groups. I took the call with great caution. He was going to tear me apart, right? Give me a piece of his mind? Turn his lawyers on me?

    The first call lasted over an hour, and the private conversation led to more calls the next week and the week after. Dan Cathy knew how to text, and he would reach out to me as new questions came to his mind. This was not going to be a typical turn of events.
    __________

    Windemeyer's blog post details how their friendship developed. The initial call and private conversation lasted over an hour followed in the weeks to come by more calls and texts. He said Cathy reached out to him as new questions came to his mind. "This was not going to be a typical turn of events."

    Cathy's questions and a series of deep conversations led to in-person meetings between the men and representatives from Chick-fil-A. Cathy said he had never before had such dialogue with any member of the LGBT community. Windemeyer wrote, "it awkward at times but always genuine and kind.

    The fast-food chain has drawn nationwide criticism from gay rights activists in recent months because of Cathy’s statements on marriage and Chick-fil-A’s support of anti-gay organizations. After Windmeyer’s group led a nationwide boycott of the chain with a “Five Simple Facts about Chick-fil-A” campaign in the summer of 2012, Cathy reached out to him. Campus Pride suspended its boycott; Windmeyer and Cathy’s subsequent, still-evolving friendship allowed the unlikely pair to enjoy a football game together on New Year’s Eve.

    Shane Windmeyer, executive director of the LGBT group Campus Pride, wrote a hugely viral blogpost for the Huffington Post this week in which he explained how he became friends with Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A.

    Could Windmeyer’s popular column represent one possible way forward amid the bitter stalemate between gay rights activists and the — often religious — supporters of traditional marriage?

    From an interview with Windmeyer about his friendship with Cathy, here are five lessons for people on both sides of the marriage argument:

    1. Let’s talk to each other.
    2. Let’s see each other as humans worthy of full dignity.
    3. Let’s understand what our differences really are and let’s seek to find common ground
    4. Let’s not be so serious all the time.
    5. Let’s all be willing to give a little.

    I wish this article was not behind the WaPo paywall. It contains sound advice worthy of our attention. Anyone who wants to read it, PM me and I will copy and forward it to you.

    I found the complete Georgia Tech address. It's half the length of this year's Benedictine address.
