I think this would qualify as state sanctioned cancel culture

The thing is the people who talk about 'cancel culture' as being real are these people, and as at UF, they will invoke a nebulous definition of "safety." Anyways, I dont think the people who were like "dont watch Louis CK comedy he's a sicko" were saying that because they thought him jerking off in front of people was a threat to public safety. Seems more like a free market thing.

Very Spirited discussion in the comments, primarily from Catholic women, to Father James Martin's post, including some informed speculation about how he got invited and whether his message was anticipated by the sisters versus the faculty and administration, including some with prior connection to Butker.

Looks like the administration very much wanted and applauded a culture war message. The Sisters were likely not consulted.

And so many layout how unsupported his views are in terms of actual magisterial teaching.

It is a skirmish in the ongoing the American Catholic civil war. This post would be equally applicable in the thread about the Holy Father's upcoming comments on 60 Minutes

    Fr. James Martin, SJ

The Toronto Blue Jays (and the city of Toronto) recently chased one of its players out of town for comments much more tepid than Butker’s. If this blows over it could signal a decisive victory over leftist cancel culture.

Or it could just mean dominant performers are largely immune to cancellation.

That's what I heard. Then again, I guess one doesn't need a uterus to be so irrationally hysterical.

Well the nuns statement is dishonest. Which is definitely concerning. They say Butker “asserted” (my quotes for assertion which the nuns used) that being homemaker is the “highest calling” for “a women”. He did not say that at all. He explained how important it was to their family that his wife “embraced one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker.”

He did not “assert” (my quote for assertion) homemaker as the highest calling for a woman. It appears the nuns have either been duped to make a statement like this. Or are just being dishonest?

Sad and sadly par for the course.

Deshaun Watson sexually assaulted like 20 women. Multiple players have been arrested for beating their wives/girlfriends over the past decade. But yeah this is why we need a change.org petition. Hilarious.

Lol! You literally are trying to claim to be more of an expert of Catholicism, the Bible, and morality than...the Pope. It is hard to even come up with a more ridiculous assertion. You haven't actually taken issue with any specific action, just attacked him as an apostate. Then you attacked the nuns as liars. Again, with no specific evidence of a lie. Then, you state people are attacking you for laughing at the notion that you know more about Catholic morality than the Pope or a group of nuns.

Again, good luck with being a better Catholic than the Pope and a group of nuns and then sitting in judgment of them. Better hope nobody decides to sit in judgment of your fruits in doing so, however.

Now it’s the nuns that are either stupid or dishonest liars? LMAO

I guess somebody skipped their Sunday school lessons on humility.

I am having a hard time deciding if you are serious or if you are secretly a conservative who created a parody account to make fun of the crazy wing of leftist alarmism.

They make some good points. One item - imo is an issue that many take glee in how his speech p/o the libs. For 20 mins he ranted what is wrong in our country and judged others. A 28 year old very wealthy young man who had well-off parents and now plays a game.

    from that letter….
“Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division….many women whom we have taught and influenced during the past 160 years. These women have made a tremendous difference in the world in their roles as wives and mothers, and through their God-given talents in leadership, scholarship and their careers.”

There were also good posts in the comments section….

“As I discussed the speech with my two daughters, I explained to them that the opinions presented within it did not represent what I had been taught by either the Sisters of Mercy for 8 years or the Jesuits for 4. I especially remember the sisters instilling in us the belief that God has blessed us all with talents and to not use them to their fullest is a sin. Why then would the same God want women to be relegated to the kitchen? Raising children is not solely a mother's responsibility, but a father's as well.“

“I understand this was a Catholic college and his audience may appreciate his view on motherhood, but the occasion was to celebrate their scholastic accomplishments. He missed the assignment.”

If we can’t get nihilists out, let’s breed them out …

In addition, of course, more traditional groups – see Butker, above – will gain influence simply because they’ll be a bigger proportion of the population. As Mark Steyn says, the future belongs to those who show up, and traditional religious groups – trad Catholics, Evangelicals, Orthodox Jews, conservative Muslims and Hindus – are reproducing at a substantially higher level than, well, let’s say the groups that protested Butker’s speech.

    Harrison Butker, Harbinger?

Just some general thoughts aside from the speech.

Every person I have ever known says that their kids are the most important part of their lives. So of course, I see it as a high "calling." It's critically important. Cliche to say, but kids really are the future.

Being a parent is a high calling for men, too, though. It strikes me that, at a time when people stress the importance of fathers being actively present and involved with their kids when it comes to problems in the inner city, for example, in this context, there's an almost exclusive focus on what women need to be doing and thinking. Men are often evaluated based upon their income or success rather than whether they make it home to have dinner with the family.

A lot of this just feels more like a reactionary opposition to feminism generally than about a focus on building strong families. That might involve more parental leave time (for both mom and dad), and asking men to consider why the vast majority of divorces actions are filed by the wife. Finally, I'm sure many more women would prefer to stay home than do if they believed they had the financial means to do so. Just my two cents.

Yea, that last paragraph especially about downplaying academic the value of their academic achievement at the very moment it was supposed to be celebrated really shows why it was so offensive
