And no one seems to quite understand what happened. Bizarre story, but it was whole he was trying to enter the PGA championship course.
Apparently there was an accident involving a fatality and some roads were blocked and he tried to go around the blocked off road. The accident did not involve Scheffler.
But one report said it was entering the course and he thought it was security, he allegedly had a policeman on his hood at one point and he kept driving, just a bizarre story.
If you watch ESPN or listen to ESPN radio, this is a dominating topic. I don't even follow golf. The NFL is pissed. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Dumb overzealous policing, and obviously trumped up charges. It was obviously a misunderstanding on the part of Scheffler. As soon as they confirmed his identity they should have released him w/ a traffic ticket. Guy was driving an official PGA courtesy vehicle FFS. Rules apply to everyone, but in the case of a sporting event with traffic control that truly is different for “the public” and the athletes, he may have simply not realized what was going on or why some security guard was stopping him.
If a cop tells you to stop then maybe you stop. I don't know all the details but this is a strange situation indeed.
Every other player got in without issue. It's very clearly just a miscommunication and the charges will almost certainly be dropped. The fact that he's already back at the course and is going to play his round confirms that.
It was dark, the officer was wearing a bright yellow vest that any security or traffic attendant at a large event wears, and players were permitted to enter the facility.
On the local news this morning, they said one cop told him to proceed. Which makes sense if the PGA told the golfers that they could go that route and the police were letting other golfers through. Also, he did stop. New bits of information keep dropping and it's hard to know what is accurate.
I think both Scheffler and the cop should've handled this better. I predict charges will be dropped and this will be a nothing burger.
