what’s surprising is Vietnam is usually at the top of the list for approval of US. Of anyone, they would seem to have a valid reason to dislike us. they like us more than we like ourselves. Robert E. Lee was an officer at West Point - as such he swore an oath to defend the U.S. constitution. When he resigned his commission, he committed treason. He waged war against the U.S. in order to perpetuate slavery. He owned slaves. There is testimony that he had several runaway slaves whipped and then had salt water poured into their wounds. Savage behavior. Stop with the scholar and gentleman garbage. If you want statues or schools named after him and his ilk, it says a lot a lot about you.
Yes I agree that is bizarre. It’s mentioned it’s for her environmental work but there are other Hollywood types that have dedicated a lot to that field. Maybe William Calley can get a statue or “day”. He was infamous for leading the My Lai massacre. Although he didn’t really get into slavery, torture, and human trafficking like Gen Bob Lee.
This is why it’s not always easy to look back hundreds of years and make judgements from our perspective. Thoughtful people realize this.

Exactly. Everyone in this thread of Monday morning quarterbacking. Applying 2024 standards to people in the 1860's who were still using horse and buggies for transportation. I'm sure there will be people 500 years from now who will look at us as savages. The idea that we would eat animal meat would disgust them and to them we would be wrong. But guess what, there is nothing wrong with eating animal meat. Maybe if I lived 500 years in the future I would think eating animal meat is wrong. But I don't live in that time, I live now and there is nothing wrong in my mind about eating animal meat. And those people 500 years in the future don't get to Monday morning quarterback and say they are morally better than us. They aren't in any way. In many ways the U.S. back then was like the E.U. today. Go to Germany and ask a German what they are? They will say they are German. They aren't going to say they're an E.U. citizen. Go to Italy. They'll say they're Italian, not an E.U. citizen. State Governments were originally meant to be far more powerful than Federal Governments. The Federal Government was truly meant mostly to provide a common defense, interstate commerce and essentially a united voice when working with other countries. Again not unlike what the E.U. is today. But back then the states were far more like countries and loyalty was to the state, not the U.S. Just like in Europe now loyalty is to the country, not the E.U. Like others have said that all got destroyed post Civil War and states now are really nothing more than administrative areas more than they are their own sovereign area. The whole idea of the U.S. was essentially that of 13 different states with 13 different governments, 13 different laws and 13 different ways of living life. If you didn't like one state then move to another state that had laws more to your liking. But it wasn't meant to be uniform in almost any way. In many ways, just the opposite, states were radically meant to be different from each other. You could actually argue that it was the Federal Government who were the traitors in the Civil War, as they went against what the very spirit of the Constitution. Again sadly at this point they are more administrative areas than they are their own country. For the south they knew if they lost it would result in a Federal Government that would by and large strip states of their individual powers, and that's essentially what has happened. I know for me I am loyal to Louisiana over the U.S. Louisiana is a part of the U.S. yes, but Louisiana, not the U.S., is my home. If the U.S. attacked Louisiana I would do anything in my power to defend Louisiana, including fighting and attacking U.S. military trying to attack the state. I swear allegiance to my home, not some bureaucratic Government 1,000 miles away in D.C. I absolutely understand any soldier from the Civil War who might not have agreed with slavery but knew there was no way they could betray their state, their country in essence at the time, and fight against it. If I lived in that time, even if I disagreed with Louisiana, I could never lift a gun or any weapon against it. The only other thing I could do would be to stay neutral, but was really wasn't an option back then. Regarding Lee, it's not your business, not my business, not D.C.'s business. It should completely be decided at the local level by those citizens. That's how this country is supposed to work. That's what D.C. has forgotten.
