KC Chiefs kicker complains about "emasculation of men," gay pride & says women should be homemakers

Didn't seem like an antagonistic comment in the interview.

 

Whatever choices he and his family have made in their life, and however much it makes sense for them in their community, it takes a special kind of a&*hole to get up in the public speech, even one in that atmosphere, and tell others that don't want to live in that lifestyle that they've been lied to and that there's something wrong with them

 

Take it for what you will. This forum seems to be a liberal groupthink. Listen and hear the other side sometimes. The smartest thing you will ever realize is when you realize how much you do NOT know.

My wife has said so many times she wished we would have had a smaller home, older vehicles and could have been a stay at home mom. Her words, not mine. The problem we have now, is ideas are no longer attacked. The Person speaking them is attacked. And 1st amendment lovers like myself have to see this. It is hard to speak anything without being attacked before you have heard their words. I am biased since I am Catholic so my ideas may be skewed as well. At least I am not attacking and willing to listen to the other side. I am just a man and way too dumb to know everything so I will always listen to the other side.

 

I assumed that. And neither do I (as I said-I'd prefer people show who they are and what they stand for), except the part about it being some diabolical plot/lie.

The woman he told to be full time homemakers have the same free will his mother did in not being one, the result of their choices, not some plot.

 

Harrison Butker is a really good NFL kicker and while I respect him for that, I could care a less about his opinion (or any other athlete for that matter) on anything outside the game of football. Why people get so worked up over what some famous person says that is outside their expertise makes no sense to me.

That said, Butker was asked to speak at a college commencement and the speech he gave was of his personal beliefs. I personally don’t agree with some of the things he said but at the same time, he simply gave his own opinions which in this case, seemed to fit with his particular audience. No blood, no foul.

 

Did you read the speech? Because I didn’t get from it at all the things you’re saying.

 

Don't know about that. News this morning said he got a standing ovation from the graduates. They interviewed one woman and she said her and about 15-20 other women were the only ones not standing. Not many unless it's a graduating class of 50-100 people.
It's a conservative / religious school. People that go there probably already have those beliefs mostly.

 

I do not believe that the NFL will "sanction" him. Also, Tebow was not "sanctioned" either. He was a poor QB that held a 47.7% completion percentage and an even worse TE.

Butker does run the risk that the moment his production dips, the Chiefs may look to get rid of him. However, unlike players who are signed to some other franchises that play home games in New York, Massachusetts, etc... Butker's views are not that unpalatable to large groups in Kansas and Missouri, ie their local fanbase.

 

Did he tell women they need to be full time stay at home mothers or dis he say his wife says she is most fulfilled in that role? Seriously asking as I haven’t read the speech or listened to it.
Is it ok to tell women that being full time stay at home moms is a noble calling and something to consider?
And why do we care what a pro athlete says about his wife? So what? I do t listen to athletes, politicians, entertainers in general.
I know I had several college professors (women) express disdain for women who wanted to pursue being full time moms - why? Why is one side bette for worse than the other. All women are not the same and should be given every opportunity to fulfill their dreams whether in the work force or at home.

 

I read his whole speech. I did not see him saying women need to be homemakers and not have careers. What he said was that women can find fulfillment in being a homemaker. Isn’t that what we want, that women have choices to follow their calling?

This speech will not affect one single person in reality. Except for those that are triggered.

 

To each their own. I had a friend growing up that all they wanted to do was get married and have babies. I know people that went to get doctorates that ended up doing that and were plenty happy.

The problem I generally have with people like this speaker, is they don't say "to each their own". They blame the problems of the world on people that aren't like them. The problem with his speech, IMO, wasn't that he was telling people to live their truth, he was blaming what is wrong with the world on people that don't live the way he thinks people should live.

That's why people like this are disliked. Just my 2 cents.

1) Don’t think he is talking about doing with less to raise kids. He’s not. Parenthetically, my wife also stayed home. But that is not what he is talking about.

2) Don’t hide your ideas behind Catholicism. And don’t pretend that Catholicism is suppressed or underrepresented in public dialogue. Just the opposite.

3) The First Amendment has nothing to do with this. He has no right to have his abhorrent ideas given any presumptive respect.

4) Stop the victimization schtick.

 

1st amendment gives us the right to say whatever we want but not the right to avoid criticism for saying it.

He ranted for 20 mins and there is so much wrong with his speech I don’t know where to begin. He attacks priests and bishops, congress for passing a bill that per his words “Biblical teachings of who killed Jesus could land you in jail.” Which is a lie. He goes after Covid policies from years ago. Claims Biden murders, gays are evil, men are emasculated, and he attacks our society in general. He’s a 28 year old silver-spooner with a privileged life, now making millions playing a game. But he’s emphatically and negatively judging everything and everyone else.

But to your point, I would be surprised if anyone here is saying a woman choosing to be a SAHM isn’t a worthy & excellent vocation. And you nailed it, for some, it’s choosing an affordable lifestyle to accomplish that. But imo the criticism he’s getting (a white, rich, young, male - privileged life) is he’s telling graduating women after one of their biggest accomplishments, they’ve been told a “diabolical lie” when it comes to what many of them dream of doing. pursuing THEIR career they just spent 4 years training for and $10s of thousands on. And he references his wife’s life didn’t start until she had babies and supported him - so he says. Why not just mention a SAHM is also a great option. Encourage everyone, give a positive message which is so needed now. Shoot, read the sermon on the mount to the graduates. It’s a Christian college which touts its faith. That would be a great message to start their pursuits. Instead his speech was negative, judgmental, and self-righteous.

But, as earlier stated, he is who he is and that’s what this college wanted.

 

I have heard that speech and argued against its insidiousness for 40 years. The only thing new is how emboldened that worldview feels that they are on the cusp of imposing it.

I know...it can be confusing, as to sanction, can also mean to punish. I was using it in the approval sense.
