I reread several articles prior to the 2023 season. Some writers were high on the Gators, others never drank the Kool-aid! I recently listened to Nick Del a Torre discuss what improvements needed to occur this year with the Gators. There are reasons for optimism but procedurally we had issues again in the Spring game. When I heard that, I said, yes, that is HUGE!!! I recently heard Billy say he has more time to focus, since he's built the foundation of the program. We all have heard there are three phases to football: offense, defense, and special teams. I am optimistic about two phases and, now, with two ST coordinators, this may be the phase that is especially needing to improve for 2024! Games could be won or lost in the fall if the Gators do not procedurally make improvements! I sense the offense and defense will be better, but there are big questions about ST. So, now, Billy fix the team procedurally, because your future and the future of Gator football depends on it!!! Gator Nation, what say you?

They’ve got to clean all that up and then they have to be able to play football.

"I recently heard Billy say he has more time to focus..."

    That explains everything then.

How the team functioned last year--they often failed procedurally. Sometimes, the OL, WR, or RB was flagged for illegal procedure (this killed the execution of the offense a great deal); sometimes, the defense was offside, out of position (a lot), missed tackles (due to taking wrong angles), being suckered into a counter play, or being confused as to what the defense was supposed to do; and, ST, suffered a number of infractions (most were bone-headed player infractions, and a few were totally coaching blunders--which, regardless, were inexcusable). And, many games in 2023 were lost because of a lack of EXECUTION!
Clearly, we had issues in 2023, due to WR's not lining up right, OL false starts, and RB's lining up on the wrong side for the play called. Often, Mertz would alert the RB to switch sides. Because of POOR EXECUTION, the offense, at times, played entire quarters scoreless. Several on this forum have said, "EXECUTION was not the problem!" EXECUTION was most certainly the problem in all phases!!! At times, the offense fizzled and relinquished a score; then, the defense turned around and gave up a score. In a matter of a few plays--because of POOR EXECUTION--the Gators often saw a 14 point swing in a matter of minutes or seconds. A team cannot expect to win games playing this way!!!

Execution was “a” problem. Inexperienced kids and lack of talent at some positions was also a glaring weakness. This year we should be a bit more experienced and talented . Hope the execution is leaps and bounds better. If we execute and quit shooting ourselves in the foot so often, we have a fighting chance in almost every game. We don’t have to win all those games for me to be happy with Napier, we just have to do the best we can with the players we have.6-9 wins that will will be fighting for. I doubt we win them all but hopefully we look legit trying.

It's called attention to detail. Saban had it. So did SOS and Urban. Napier's teams at Louisiana seemed to have it. That is what is so confusing to me.

    Nothing to
Nothing to be confused about: year one, new system and quarterback; year two, young, inexperienced, players who didn't execute. With experienced players on defense, we should see a much improved defense. The only questions for me on defense will be the DL--can they finally get pressure on the qb and defend the run. With the additions of Coach Robert's, Chapman and Harris, I am very confident! Obviously, we need to stay healthy at LB. We are very deep at Safety and CB. Trikweze and DJ can play Safety, Corner, or Star. If the Star position has a huge impact, the defense should shine! As well, the defense should create more turnovers, giving the offense a short field. The defense will not be porous either, which should stop opposing offenses, and give our offense more opportunities to score.
If we get Badger and he's a go for this fall, opposing defenses will not just have to stop Trey. If we have receiver's step up this year and become a threat downfield, we will not be dependent on Badger committing and being healthy. Go Gators!

Add in a handful of coaching brainfarts and it definitely makes it more difficult.

Thankfully we did not commit many turnovers.

On the flip side we were woeful in creating them, which is a blarimg alarm.

What I meant by attention to detail is what happened in the spring game. On a place kick the defense only had 10 on the field. We saw so many similar mistakes of that nature last year. Simply can't have that and be able to win games.

If you watch our new DB coach (Will Harris) talk you can see how he emphasizes getting to the ball and causing turnovers. I would like to see our DBs get INts by the boatload this coming season. INTs are one glaring and missing aspect to our DBs that needs to change for the better. Our back-end defense (DBs, LBs and Safeties) used to be known for INTs on defense. We have to get back to that kind of aggressiveness on that side of the ball.

Up to this point, most of us (including me) are in total agreement with you.

Here is where you and your train set comes off the tracks!

The follow is the box scores for the Gator 2023 season
    Scoreless Gator Opponents
    Opponent Quarters Points Points

    Utah 1st, 3rd 11 24
McNeese St No qtrs 49 7
    Tennessee 3rd 29 16
    Charlotte No qtrs 22 7
    Kentucky 1st, 4th 14 33
    Vandy No qtrs 38 14
USC East No qtrs 41 39
    UGA 2nd, 3rd 20 43
    ARK No qtrs 36 39
    LSU No qtrs 35 52
    Misery No qtrs 31 33
    FSU 1st, 4th 15 24

Total games played = 12 Total quarters played = 48 Total scoreless quarters = 9

In a comparison UGA had a total of 7 scoreless quarters this past season.

As for the rest of your rant, I do admit that the Gator Offense had way too many moments of a Lack of EXECUTION at certain times in the 2023 season.

Question: Did you do any research/review of the 2023 season?
If you did, you would of noticed that the Gators only had 9 scoreless points for the entire season. You would of noticed how many points the Gators Offense scored in 5 of their last seven games. Also, you failed to account for that Mertz did not play in the FSU game (due to injury) and that Max Brown (a Freshman) started that game.

Now we need to talk about the real ugly elephant in the room that you ignored. That ugly elephant was the Gator Defense of 2023. In this area there really was a lot failure to execute and a lot of mistakes, especially the bone headed mistakes. In 2023 the UF Defense gave up 28.8 points per game (which ranked 43rd in the nation. Colorado came in number 1 at 44.5 points per game. As for total yards per game, the 2023 Gator Defense came in over 100 in the nation.

To sum it up, your rant and focal point of Lack of EXECUTION should of been place on the Gator D.

Had you looked at the 2023 Gator Defense, you would of seen that the Gator D lost more games then the Gator O did.

The next time you want to huff and puff here, I suggest that you do some Googling and extract the correct information so that you can pontificate.

Please note that I am not bashing the Gator D. That side of the team had a lot more fixing to do then the Gator O did. Also, late in the season they had some injuries and they played against some good offenses that were peaking. These guys are great and they gave it their all. With their growth and the new players coming in, I am sure that we will have more than just a So SO defense.

In a spring in itself , it doesn’t worry me much. There’s no set lineups and that should lead to a little confusion.

My "rant!" LOL! Your post was quite exceptional, but you obviously WERE NOT paying attention. Your long tirade was all about how I obsessed over the poor offensive performance and ignored the pitiful defense (and I included the defense, ST, and the coaching being a problem). So, I will quote myself, "Sometimes, the defense was offside, out of position (a lot), missed tackles (due to taking wrong angles), being suckered into a counter play, or being confused as to what the defense was supposed to do; and, ST, suffered a number of infractions (most were bone-headed player infractions, and a few were totally coaching blunders--which, regardless, were inexcusable). And, many games in 2023 were lost because of a lack of EXECUTION!"
You need to look up the word "rant," because it is has a VERY negative connotation! Despite the use of all caps and exclamation marks (which I often incorporate for attention and to express feeling), in no way is indicative of ranting--unless I have a habit of doing so. Your funny! Do you often wrte in such a hyperbolic fashion?

You need to check your reading comprehension on my reply and on what ranted (you wrote). Also, before you say that I am negative, you need read your post again. It was far from being positive (without the use of bolding and italics).

I started my reply with; "Up to this point, most of us (including me) are in total agreement with you."
In other words I agreed with the points that you listed.

What you failed to remember was your comment, "Clearly, we were lucky to win any games in 2023". By the way that point was beyond hyperbola. This was the beginning of your train wreck.

From there you wrote an entire paragraph that was very one sided. It was one sided in that you only listed the negative points and none of the positive points (which there were many). Thus, that paragraph painted dismal and inaccurate description of the 2023 Gator Offense.

Yes, I agree that this offense was far from perfect. However it was not to total crap show that you described. Then there was your statement' "Clearly, we were lucky to win any games in 2023". If I am not mistaken, that comment was totally hyperbola and insulting.

If you clearly believe that "we were lucky to win any games in 2023", then I suggest that you google the results of the 2023 seas
    • The Gator Offense was scoreless for only 9 quarters out of 48 quarters.
    • That they scored more than 20 points 8 times.
    • In the 5 of the 7 loses, they were in still in game, late in the 4th quarter.
Please note that if the Gator Defense had played better, some of those late season losses could of been victories. Thus you would need something else to rant about.

Players on both sides of the ball have to separate themselves in their level of play from opponents. That is the key.
