The old Abbott & Costello routine is applicable here: https://www.wsj.com/science/academic-studies-research-paper-mills-journals-publishing-f5a3d4bc In a world that emphasizes speed to market who is to say, full stop, what is “true”? Science is based on hypotheses and ongoing testing- which takes time to do correctly. No one today has time for accuracy it seems.
Sadly, all too true...as in the case of Theranos, Bankman-Fried, and many other issues as it's not "science" nor "big business" nor "elite universities" but misguided people, who come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and political persuasions.
I read the article quickly. Seems to be a learning curve against the disinformation cycle we are in. Doesnt it seem like the process is working? Frauds are discovered and poorly vetting institutions are being closed?
I don't have a WSJ subscription and can't read it. But ... I imagine there's always been some degree of dishonesty, mistakes, jumping the gun ... And it could well be worse now with the internet making it much easier to spread the false stuff. But I'm also sure that some people will use it to reject all scientific developments and conclusions that they simply don't like.
Capitalism and truth are in competition, perhaps we could reorganize society in such a way so as speed to market to further capital accumulation is not a societal priority
Science is about questioning, unless it’s climate change, Covid, lithium battery disposal or several other Libby Holy Grails.
The most important thing when discussing science is to turn it into a left-right argument so you can complain about liberals. That's the key to any good scientific discussion.
Exactly. That’s why when liberals conflate science with their political policies it is very apparent to those who really understand science
Seems like the tide is turning on “fake” science research papers. Maybe eliminating the financial reward to these scum publishers would help. https://www.wsj.com/science/academi...urnals-publishing-f5a3d4bc?st=zpf48se42xhsfib Wiley to shutter 19 more journals, some tainted by fraud “The journal Science flagged the practice of buying authorship in 2013. The website Retraction Watch and independent researchers have since tracked paper mills through their advertisements and websites. Researchers say they have found them in multiple countries including Russia, Iran, Latvia, China and India. The mills solicit clients on social channels such as Telegram or Facebook, where they advertise the titles of studies they intend to submit, their fee and sometimes the journal they aim to infiltrate. Wise said he has seen costs ranging from as little as $50 to as much as $8,500. When publishers become alert to the work, mills change their tactics. “It’s like a virus mutating,” said Dorothy Bishop, a psychologist at the University of Oxford, one of a multitude of researchers who track fraudulent science and has spotted suspected milled papers.”
This is so stupid and insidious. Peter Pomerantzev wrote a book about this argument - It's just an attempt to pollute the world and ensure that no one believes anything.
This is literally on the front page already and viruses are fake. Science - who’s on first? | Swamp Gas Forums
