Th Roman Catholic Church (and I was raised a Catholic) knows nothing of right and wrong. If a priest refused me communion I would wear that refusal as a badge of honor.
I try to stay out of religious debates here. Honestly I do. I think it’s like a former Supreme Court Justice said about pornography. I can’t define it but I know it when I see it. There is no greater evil in our world then those who want to control women and their choices.
That's not the Church - that is an individual priest. Pope Francis has already decried the withholding of communion. Pope Francis says he has never denied Communion, warns against politicizing Eucharist.
I would just like to say for the record that an eighteen month old dog is not a puppy. So fake news I guess.
It's absolutely amazing we have 23 pages of liberals pretending that they actually care about a dog or puppy being killed.
If you are an adult and really think you need a Bible to tell you right from wrong, then I feel bad for you. The Bible, and the people who push Christianity, are basing it on the same type of reasoning that 3 to 7 year olds understand. "Avoid punishment" aka not going to hell, and "Reward for good behavior" aka going to heaven. Kohlberg's stages of moral development say the epitome of moral development is contemplating "right and wrong" on your own and coming to your own conclusions.
How do you know Kohlberg is right? How does Kohlberg know what the correct set of personal ethical principles are?
check out her twitter page. Lots of comments and memes in response to her posts about weather, etc. https://x.com/kristinoem?s=11&t=SllCtwkhPrqpQYWKhw4lnw “When you say “take care of your neighbors” what exactly do you mean by that? Like help them out or do you mean bring them down to the gravel pit?” “Dangerous Weather? Maybe you can shoot it?”
It’s the ethic of reciprocity. Treat others like you want to be treated. It really all stems from that one simple guideline.
Yeah, the golden rule is the most basic tenet in all societies. It covers both self interest and altruism, which are the two basic pillars of societal structure and existed long before the Bible. Almost everything in every religious text stems from that basic idea.
There is nothing novel about the moral rules set forth in the Bible. What makes them unique is the method of enforcement so to speak. The promise of eternal paradise and the threat of eternal damnation effectively get millions of knuckle dragging mouth breathers to adhere to the ethic of reciprocity who otherwise wouldn’t. And for that I begrudgingly deal with Christianity/religion. A necessary evil.
That doesn't matter, it's not about telling you what is right or wrong, it's about evaluating the level of contemplation put into a person's decision making. Adults should be operating at a level where they can decide what is right or wrong without having to pretend an invisible man in the sky agrees with them.
How would you like to be the publishing company executive that decided it would be a good idea to give this armed bimbo an advance for her book?
How do you evaluate if someone’s decision making is ethically valid? Obviously, you would not defend every single instance of decision making, but you would probably defend some instances of decision making. So, if it is not about right and wrong, how does one sort good ethical decision making from bad ethical decision making?
I would submit that it's a little more complex than that, though I take your point that one can Intuit and reason to moral conduct without guidance from religion. Orthopraxis at its core is not following rules for reward or avoiding punishment, it's about trying to realize what you were meant to be. That's an insufficient explanation. I don't have the words. But that's the concept I'm trying to convey.
That question is exactly why she got destroyed over the dog. People view dogs as an extension of their family. Most people couldn’t conceive of the idea of killing any dog they were responsible for, let alone a 14 month old pup. But what isn’t being talked about is that this isn’t even the majority of the reason she’s getting destroyed. Inherently, most people view it as sociopathic that she would then brag about it to score political points. It basically paints what she did in an even worse light than it already was. Jmo.
