Way back when Republicans first starting pushing vouchers for students from poorer families, I figured this had to be the end game. They weren't doing it for those kids, they were doing it for their kids.
based on our school calendar 12 days for xmas/NY - 8 days more than our company 14 other days off that most private sector don't get. hurricane makeup days, easter Monday, presidents day, yom kippur, mlk day, spring break, etc that is how I got to 9 months in my math
You are correct. Problem is…admin has become weaker and weaker and they cave to the uneducated, boisterous mob crowd. These schools would watch the movie Lean on Me in awe. They’d think it was a science fiction movie. The private school my child attends boots anyone…I mean any student involved in a fight. They’re gone the next day. ZERO tolerance for the bullshit. That’s what it takes to make real people.

For those with kids attending private schools Florida is ahead of the curve. And no they don’t have to be Christian Schools. Gonna be nice this year with two in Private School (not a Christian School for all the Christian haters out there). No income restrictions. The only problem with this program that I have heard is some schools are just upping their tuition to match what the state is paying. Not sure how to stop that. As that is not what should be done by a school but I get why they would. But give parents options. Though there is a chance she may end up at one of those dreaded Christian High Schools .
Why are we giving money for kids to attend private schools and charter schools with an abundance of unlicensed teachers?
We are doing just fine. On both ends. Florida is defining how to do it. I have kids in both public and private. The private school is probably more liberal than the public schools here in Marion county lol. We need to give parents choices to find the best place for their kid. All three of ours were part of one of the best Elementary schools in the state. But we decided to change how kids got into the magnet school and have knocked it out of being a top 10 school in the state to just being a very good school. I was there as it happened. It was easy to see and why our two younger kids are in private now. It is unfortunate for the communities the magnet school was helping. But they went to a fairness system to bring kids in and it destroyed what made the school and its sister school so successful. The sister school has not dropped quite as much but it has also dropped off. Communities need to think outside the box instead of listening to teachers unions.
Note how phil wrote his post. Did not provide the district/County he lives. Chooses a county in Florida that is solid for education but obviously has far more people. He is teaching math and understands you can do a lot with numbers. So his kids are blessed to have him as a teacher. I am positive my daughter at Forest would be blessed to have him as a teacher. But nothing of his post speaks to reality without specifics. The only time I ever advised my daughter to switch a class was this year for AP PreCalc. Her teacher was a second year teacher and the second day her comments were concerning. The other teacher was a veteran teacher known as being tough but I told her to switch. Next thing you know the young teacher leaves a few months in to Volusia County as she got engaged or something along those lines. She already should not have been put in the position to teach the class she was but then that and it was no doubt the right decision to switch. I honestly want my kids taking the tough teachers. And I am sure phil is one I would love to have as an influence in her life. But Florida is doing great at Education. And the foundation was actually laid decades ago. And we continue to build on it!
Florida is pretty good, ranked something like 14th for K-12 ... but this thread is about Florida teacher's pay being dead last in the US for established teachers. If Florida is doing great at education, then their pay should reflect that, right?
I think this is true. They’ve looked at studies comparing public and private schools, and when you adjust for demographic income factors, such as parents income, the results are largely the same. It really kind of makes sense to me. Kids will typically first rise to their innate level of ability and motivation, and secondly to motivation by the family. After that to a degree the motivation of peers and finally teachers. That’s not to say teachers don’t make a difference. They can over the period they are present. But over time those other factors will overwhelm this effect.
Many of those teachers are former public school teachers who left due to the nonsense they have to put up with from Admins, students, parents.
