Not going to go down that rabbit hole with you. I was only making the point that consequences go beyond social, unless you consider expulsion from a public school for example a social consequence. If 1A were absolute, the kid could sue the school (particularly if it were public) and win. But they can’t. Certain allowances have always been made to restrict free speech at schools, which was the point of this entire discussion. Folks here and elsewhere seem to conflate protests, free speech and allowable actions, when they aren’t always the same thing depending on circumstance, even in a government space.
Alan's was good, but I preferred Shelley's. He passed away in 2018 in Sarasota. RIP, Shelley, and thank you for many, many, many great subs. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/heraldtribune/name/shelley-lederman-obituary?id=10068062
Gordie’s on 34th was great too. They delivered but didn’t have trucks. Employees used their own cars.
This really made me laugh. This isn’t even a knock in them, but college protestors in general. They have zero clue what real sacrifice or commitment is.
This also confirms that Biden has a big problem on his hands in November with young Arabs and young people in general. They won't vote for Trump, but they won't vote for Biden either. The reason this is being tolerated as much as it is by university admin is because there are enough of them to cause major problems if they step in to suppress the dissent. This movement appears wholly organic to me. Again, I don't necessarily agree with the tactics, but there's a reason they are taking it to these extremes. It's not yet up to the same level of animus in terms of sheer volume, but it shares a lot of parallels to the younger crowd who opposed LBJ in 1968. Would any of you be surprised if they stormed the Democratic National Convention this summer? It is building towards something eerily similar to that.
Indeed. They are already stalking him at all his campaign stops, so it's not out of the question. If the university admin are afraid of these people, what are the Democrats going to do in that scenario? There isn't much they can do without it getting very ugly.
What is "this"? To answer your questions: Yes. Yes. Yes. (If you're at a public university or college.) Columbia tried bringing in police early. It only caused more people to protest and the protest to spread elsewhere. Force is not always the best answer.
if this is true, on top of everything else that’s happened there, ucla is gonna get sued into oblivion.
I almost inadvertently gave you some bacon there ora. Well, if you don't like bacon, don't post things where fat fingers are poking around.
I'd say be careful about believing everything coming out of UCLA. There's a lot of problematic shit happening there. These Twitter accounts post one-sided (and often edited) clips. The pro-Palestinian protesters have undoubtedly done bad things, as have the counter-protesters. The violent clashes between the groups aren't one-sided.
Which was why I said “if true”. But drawing some sort of equivalency between the two sides and their behaviors to this point is crazy. Meantime, 300 were arrested at Columbia, they are getting charged with burglary among other things. So all the TikTok protestors are about to flush their futures away over a cause that half of them don't even understand. When the police surrounded the hall they had illegally occupied, one woman could be heard yelling “can we just go home? We have finals”. That’s after yesterday when their “spokesperson” suggested that the school meal plan should be honored while they were illegally occupying a building, and that if anyone dies of starvation or dehydration it’s on the school. The cognitive dissonance between what they think they are doing and the position they are actually in is staggering.
Right. Because there's no equivalency between protesters and counter-protesters who are each engaging in violence, using hateful language, and making their campus a worse place to be. I'll leave these here: "They Saw a Protest": Cognitive Illiberalism and the Speech-Conduct Distinction How political partisanship can shape memories and perceptions of identical protest events Reporting from student journalists who were there: Pro-Israel counter-protesters attempt to storm encampment, sparking violence - Daily Bruin
One group broke the law on campus after campus, occupied buildings, made whole parts of campus no go zones for Jews, vandalized, openly supported groups designated terror orgs, physically attacked people. and the other side did what that outside of what happened last night at ucla? And that only happened after weeks of aggression from the other side and zero support from the school or LE. There’s a reason that one side has seen upwards of a thousand arrests and the other side has seen almost none, and it’s not Islamophobia or a Jewish conspiracy. But yeah, I’m sure there are good people on both sides.
Yeah, the reason is the official position of the USA is to support Israeli and Zionist violence, only one side opposes that. Same reason Rittenhouse walked, because killing anti-racist protesters is just 'self-defense' in a racist country.
You're misinformed if you think last night was the first time that the counter-protesters at UCLA were provoking confrontations. You save your condemnations for one side and make excuses for the other. (And before you try to misrepresent what I'm saying, no, I'm not saying the pro-Palestinian protesters are innocent, weren't also provoking confrontations, and weren't behaving terribly.)
