If someone is a right-winger that bashes the LGBTQ community I tend to assume they are closeted. Right-wingers get caught all the time for engaging in acts that represent the complete opposite of that that they speak out against
I draw two lines: one for Israel another for Hamas. One can debate all day who's most at fault. Personally, I think Israel is because of their history of mistreatment of Palestinians, and for their disproportionate reaction to Hamas's October atrocities. Which came first - the chicken or the egg?
Israel is at fault? While I agree now is the time for a ceasefire, it's been the Arabs/Palestinians who are largely responsible for the current state of affairs. Going all the back to 1947 and 1948 it was the Arab countries who refused to accept the original 2-state solution provided under the 1947 UN resolution partitioning the British Protectorate of Palestine. Although it's not the case with the current Netanyahu government and it hasn't been the case under some previous Likud governments, numerous Israeli government have attempted to negotiate a 2-state solution and have almost always been rejected by the Arab countries and/or Palestinians who refused to negotiate in good faith. The following quote from the former Israeli foreign minister, the late Abba Eban says it all.
You make an excellent point, and I do not for one minute excuse what Hamas so stupidly did, but neither do I sweep under the rug what Israel has done to the Palestinians - the OVERWHELMING majority of which just want to live with their families in peace - in recent decades under a far-right wing government. So, to continue my silly metaphor, let's say the egg came first, but that a chicken was involved.
It should be said that the Israeli "two state" solution on offer has typically been one in which Palestine wasnt fully autonomous. I would turn down being their version of Puerto Rico too.
Well because of course. Waiting for the obligatory Che Guevara t shirt from one of the faculty. Hezbollah flag at US college protest sparks fury
A fair number of powerful Israelis rejected the UN Resolution as well. Many of those that accepted it only did so because they viewed it as a tactical success in pursuit of more territory (this was Ben-Gurion's position). Begin and some of the more radical Zionists rejected it (and continued to do so for decades, declaring something very similar to an Israeli version of "From the River to the Sea"). I'd suggest that neither side has acted in good faith for the most part. Which is not to excuse the actions of Hamas or to suggest that both are equally at fault. Just pointing out that the history has a lot of bad faith from leaders in Israel as well as from Palestinians.
It's been my understanding that although they didn't like the partition under the 1947 UN resolution (the territory designated for the Jewish state was small, non-contiguous and effectively not defensible) Ben-Gurion and the mainstream Zionist movement accepted it. You are correct regarding Manachem Begin although he was considered somewhat of an extremist outlier. Sadly the current government of Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu represents the same vision of Israel as Begin did over 70 years ago.
Guy is a complete loon.. “Zionists should not be alive “. This is what Columbia produces. Remember this is all ‘protected speech’ but if you misgender someone in the military you are subject to court martial MSN
It's a scrambled mess stretching back hundreds - thousands of years with ancient tribal and religious animosities escalating into violence egged on by subsequent generations believing themselves justified to avenge ancient wrongs. There can be, will be no appeasement, no true long lasting peace until each faction is willing to release the generational tribal hate they apparently believe they are obligated to serve. Billy Graham once made a comment about the impossibility of restoring marriages broken in acrimony and divorce. What he said somewhat applies. You can't put broken eggs back together. Might it perhaps be easier for all if some brave souls initiated the long conversation telling parents and grandparents to stuff the hate.
What he said is unacceptable. But you couldn't find a tweet that wasn't from a bigoted person? "Whose place did Khymani take?" No bueno.
Agreed. The news about what Hamas did made my blood boil. Even just reading about it now makes my blood boil. Those terrorists deserve nothing but misery and death. However, it is not acceptable to kill innocent people, especially women and children, as a form of collective punishment to get revenge. Do I understand the desire for vengeance? Yes. But we as people have to be better than this.
You'd have been a hard hat in the '60's. Damn kids exercising their First Amendment rights in a way I disapprove of!
In fairness there aren’t many examples in Palestine and the Muslim world of free and fair democracies. The Arab spring turned out to be a bust. It isn’t to say it’s impossible, but it seems unlikely. While I support the concept of a two state solution in theory, in practicality I suspect it won’t work. Too many Palestinians have wedded themselves to the historical narrative that all the land is theirs. A 67 borders with swaps likely will never be good enough for them.
I don't disagree. But denying them self-determination and equal rights won't get them there. Societies evolve. One can only hope that part of the world will evolve in terms of freedom and equality. As for what the Palestinians will take, hard to say when neither side is truly interested in making a deal.
So that's your family portrait? Nice... I'm sure they're all very politically engaged/active in real world politics.
It is a moral dilemma. Do you strive towards the ideal, or to the realistic and pragmatic. I tend to err towards the pragmatic, but the downside of that is it becomes a self reinforcing loop against the ideal. Also, I think it is easy for us to say what Israel should aspire to. But we don’t live next to them. In the history of Israel, there has never been a good faith negiator negotiating for the Palestinians, and no attainable deal has ever been good enough. That could be for various self serving reasons, but one of them may Palestinians do not and will not support any attainable compromise. prior to October 7th, only about a 1/3 or so supported Hamas. On the flip side, a 1/3 of the country supported Hamas, a known terrorist group. One person getting more support was Marwan Barghouti, a person in jail in Israel for perpetuating and orchestrating terrorist attacks in Israel Gazans’ Pre-War Views of Hamas After the attacks Hamas support increased Palestinian poll shows a rise in Hamas support and close to 90% wanting US-backed Abbas to resign Also while the terrorist attacks ramped up the violence and atrocities, both Hamas and Hezbolleh routinely launched rockets at Israel. We just ignored them because Israel was able to mostly negate them. If Cuba were routinely launching rockets at us I’m pretty sure that would be “fixed” pronto. Add to that the misinformation coming out of Gaza on casualties which are clearly skewed. The actual statistics are probably pretty typical of other wars. The biggest problem for me, while I can rationalize much of Israel’s response, Netanyahu is a bad faith actor, is complicit in the attacks both from support of Hamas and negligence by diverting Gaza border resources to the West Bank occupation. Plus the fact that he has every selfish reason to perpetuate the conflict because as soon as it is over he is likely toast.
