Don’t disagree. Laborer can be a valid skill. The issue is to (try to) reduce the number of bad actors while allowing folks wanting to be productive guests to join us. If our limited resources were focused on vetting immigrants and issuing work visas more than the govt housing and transporting them and law enforcement at the border all would be better off.
Current system seems rather uncontrolled and extremely poorly managed here and abroad. Immigrants or their coyotes cutting and climbing border “fences” and even bum rushing apparently hapless armed border guards doesn’t seem to show much control. Neither does poorly handling temporary housing facilities at the border and in recipient communities. This style of immigration is not what is needed.
We are building temporary housing and tent encampments because we are controlling entry to such a high degree we have nowhere to put all the people we detained and have to process. If we had 'uncontrolled entry,' they would be fending for themselves after they bypassed minimal border security. Last time we really had uncontrolled entry, we had ships of Irish people just show up and get conscripted into the Union Army or to work in some factory.
I'm getting come on mans for my post, but it is crystal clear to me from my observations and reading that this is precisely what's behind the MAGA movement. The increasing diversity in America scares the hell out of the white, Christian populists. As just one glaring example, it's what's behind their attempts, largely successful, to make voting more difficult. And what does one think was behind January 6?
If by problems you mean lower crime rates, I'd say that's not a problem. I don't think anybody is arguing for no process. But what too many folks call "uncontrolled entry" isn't anything actually approaching that. In fact, attempts at applying punitive border policy have led to increases in actual "uncontrolled entry." Certainly, we should establish a process and vet people (something we currently do). But that system is never going to be perfect in stopping crime. No system is. Evidence of lower crime rates: Law-Abiding Immigrants: The Incarceration Gap Between Immigrants and the US-born, 1870–2020 https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w31440/w31440.pdf "[S ]tarting in 1960, immigrants have become significantly less likely to be incarcerated than the US-born, even though as a group immigrants now are relatively younger, more likely to be non-white, have lower incomes, and are less educated – characteristics often associated with involvement in the criminal justice system. Today, immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated than all US-born men, and 30% less likely to be incarcerated relative to white US-born men." https://www.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/2020-10/working-paper-60.pdf "Whether one focuses on criminal convictions, arrests, or the number of individuals convicted or arrested, the results are the same: illegal immigrants have a lower crime rate than native-born Americans in Texas. Legal immigrants have the lowest rates of all, except for some measures of property crime where illegal immigrants are even less crime prone. Native-born Americans living in Texas have the highest criminal conviction and arrest rates in all of the figures above. Even on the margin, there is no statistically significant effect of the illegal immigrant population on the rate of criminal convictions, either overall or for illegal immigrants specifically."
No just clearing land so more people with more cars, can create more trash and sewage to be treated, use more water and natural resources. My comments are for no immigration controls. We need immigration but not too much. That’s where we most likely have a different opinion.
What do you suppose people who live in other countries do, or is America in its own pollution-free zone and not part of the world as a whole? Aren't they going to live somewhere? Or is this a self-own where you say Americans make more pollution and are more destructive and wasteful? So we need less Americans or something? I mean we can always do something about our lifestyle choices too.
So it is better if those same people are living elsewhere, where their labor isn't nearly as needed? People are a source of substantial strength for an economy and a country.
Like I said, if these people are already alive, they have to live somewhere, and 'the environment' isnt just in the USA. Considering people in developed countries procreate less, that isnt an argument against bringing them here either!
The question Malthusians have never been able to answer even remotely accurately: what is "overpopulation?" Technological advances, which occur at greater rates with greater populations, result in an ever-increasing set of resource availability by increased production efficiency and limiting resource utilization in many markets.
Definitely. And on one side of the political aisle we have a party that doesn't advocate too much of a plan to do or improve these things. On the other we have a party that does similarly little, but regularly incites its voting base by telling racist lies. Which do you give your support to?
You're right to gig me insofar as I was too general. Let me narrow it to the overwhelming majority of evangelicals and all MAGA's. What's that, less than 40% of our population? They constitute a grave and immediate threat to the Republic in their obvious quest for a theocracy. Christians outside that group - hopefully the majority - practice their religion as commanded by Jesus. They are tolerant, loving and kind. My wife and are family are in that group, and I couldn't love and respect that group more.
I think it’s past time for a reset but the tribes won’t open their eyes. Pols suck, practically without exception.
Sadly, sometimes even that isn't enough. Mine are all over 21 now and mature beyond their years, I'm more confident but preteen, it can be a crap shoot, even after if they mature slowly. Some awesome parents have had some very unwarranted outcomes
No disagreement with that. I will wait to read the study on post COVID and the last four years of migrant caravans. Perhaps the numbers will change a bit since it seems more bad actors are recognizing easier opportunity to infiltrate our insufficiently controlled border along with the masses that were practically invited via Biden’s series of first day exec orders. Budgetary impacts are probably a larger issue for the areas forced to absorb the newbies in highest concentration. From personal observation the airlines are benefitting by fuller flights north out of Texas. Wife and I encountered about half a plane load of immigrants carrying govt issued envelopes with cards explaining that they were from (insert Central American country) and didn’t speak English. We helped a group of about twenty confirm their correct gate but were thinking that flights like theirs don’t leave room for travelers whose connecting flights are inevitably late. Luckily, we made our flight to PC.
Especially those who have as one of their biggest election "planks".... turning their base rabidly angry through a litany of racist lies about immigration, no? Can't think that that will help get the rational compromise needed to well regulate a necessary non-native component of the labor force. You would never cast a vote for such unproductive outright racism, would you?
I remember I got called racist for saying that Muslims have higher birth rates. Well...it is clearly true. Data visualization isn't always politically correct, but that is what it says.
