I think it’s the damned “lesser evil” reasoning. As long as one voting for the lesser evil, there is no absolute bottom. Anything can be justified, as long as the other guy is worse.
Trump's attorney literally argued in court this week that Biden has the right to murder Trump. We live in crazy times.
Good essay by John Ganz on the monarchical antecedents to the Trump immunity argument How should we understand this apparent contradiction between Trump the meager man and Trump’s pretensions to being il Duce? I thought of Ernst Kantorowicz’s 1957 book The Kings Two Bodies: A Study in Mediaeval Political Theology. In that classic study, Kantorowicz describes how lawyers and political philosophers in the middle ages and early modern period developed a conception of the monarchy where the king was understood to have two bodies, his literal, corporeal one and another, incorporeal one, co-extensive the state, or, as Kantorowicz argues, the origin of the myth of the state itself. Trump certainly has his share of “Defects and Imbecilities,” yet in office, his lawyers would like us to believe, he becomes this other, mystical being, an embodiment of the American volk’s own will. With the powers granted to him by this type of political theology, he is somehow identical with and above the Constitution. Now this is starting to sound a little familiar. By dint of holding that office, he had, as Trump likes to say, “total immunity.” Again, this is the legal philosophy for a monarchy, not a republic, which by definition recognizes nothing above the law and, like the Lord God in Heaven, is “not a respecter of persons.” Trump's Two Bodies
So, now that we know Trump literally pays for what stories can be printed, and literally controls the news, can we agree that it’s now laughable when he claims something is “fake news?”
The got Capone on tax evasion. Trump is a Leona Helmsley style New Yorker. He thinks rules are for little people.
Social libertarian? So you think what a woman decides to do with her body is none of our concern? If that isn’t the case you aren’t a social libertarian.
Odd that a "social libertarian" has such a negative preoccupation with drag queens and trans people. I suspect we have a definitional issue. To some it may mean they no longer wear their white hoods at social functions.
Yep, I briefly worked for a guy (ex NYer) who was a minor league version of trump. He wanted 2 sets of books, wanted to put all personal expenses thru the company, thought all bills were negotiable and never wanted to pay anybody in less than 90 days. Often said "if you want to play with the big boys this is how you do it". Funny thing is he also had operations in Russia and bankrupted what had been a profitable company, but he did walk away with a nice chunk of change himself
Article claims Supreme Court demonstrates that Trump is not incompetent. On the contrary, he is described as a "master" at what he does, and claiming that he is "supreme". Opinion: The Supreme Court just showed us that Trump is not incompetent. He's a master of corruption
Good article. The only "news" about this, though, is that it's news to anyone. Trump is an outright criminal, and the USSC is crooked as a hound's leg. It's (long past) time to acknowledge that ANY vote for today's Trumppublican party is a vote for a criminal organization.
