Some people get more done in 4 hours than other do in 8, doesn’t mean we need to gut hours, it means we need to let the less productive go…
Their timing is very poor, with the country going into a recession. This is when the union should hope that they don't have to see any layoffs. The standard procedure for a union is to wait until the company is seeing massive profits and demand a bigger share of them, and then hold the company to that during bad times and see if the company goes bankrupt. It's a bad system for determining raises. Factories in the south are typically non-union, and the workers make a better salary (compared to the cost of living) than UAW workers do up north. The company saves money without having a union, and they pass some of the savings on to the workers to prevent them from voting in a union. That happens throughout all industries. In many of the industries, the companies will give out annual bonuses to the workers to reward them for having a successful year with high profits. This keeps the company from going broke during the bad years, as they can stop giving out bonuses and the workers will understand. And the workers feel like they are sharing the profits in a good year. UAW president reacts to automakers' temporary layoffs of non-striking employees: 'Their plan won't work'
If it takes less man hours to make an EV as compared to an ICE vehicle, I can see why the automakers are supportive of a move to more EVs. It makes sense why the UAW is opposed to the move to a higher percentage of EVs.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/09/22/uaw-strike-updates-biden/ Biden to join UAW protest. In my mind that is highly inappropriate. Not a fan of this at all.
One of the things that the UAW got wrong during this strike is claiming that the profits that were directed towards stock buybacks should have gone to the union workers (and the union). Buying back stocks is something that companies do to not to make stockholders wealthier (although that is a side-effect), but to improve the financial health of the company. They get better rates on the loans that companies use to finance their operations and pay for capital improvements, and that can make a big impact on the bottom line. Employees should be happy to see the company invest in itself, generally speaking.
It’s all done for stock price. A bank would rather you have the excess cash. They don’t care how many shares are outstanding.
He may well be an idiot; but, that is not what he said. He did say "Ronald Reagan set an example when he told Federal workers, Air Traffic controllers, if you strike you get fired...and he did." So, Scott recognized Reagan was dealing with Federal workers, separate from the private sector.
I don’t know listen again and notice the bold words: “If you strike you’re fired. Simple concept to me. To the extent we could use that once again, absolutely. Second thing I would do….”
It was illegal for federal workers to strike, so they were fired for breaking the law. They were given an ample amount of time to return to work and those that did not return were terminated.
Thanks for completing the thought. Ordinary income vs long term gains when sold. I am not a fan of buybacks.
Volkswagen in Tennessee becomes the first foreign automaker in the U.S. deep south to unionize. The UAW is targeting 13 automakers for unionization. Hopefully the workers and management at the other factories will be smarter . . . Next up is Mercedes in Alabama. Probably a much tougher sell. Volkswagen has always been tone-deaf in a lot of ways, so it is not surprising that they were not paying attention to their workers (they were also behind the scandal to fake out the EPA on vehicle emissions some years ago). Volkswagen ‘the first domino to fall’ after union vote, says UAW president
not using the american union template. EU unions and companies see each other as partners working to get the best for both. that works for the better. US union mentality is company is enemy and you get yours and to heck with the other side. this always works for the worse.
Welcome to America. We're an adversarial country. That's more on the corporations who fight unions tooth and nail than anybody. I am a member of the UAW. I recommend people unionize. Gotta protect yourselves. Your employer sure as shit won't.
protect yourself by making yourself valuable to the company. if they don't appreciate your skill set, someone else will. unions had a place at one time in america, not so much anymore. there needs to be collaboration instead of confrontation and us union leaders, much like maga, get much more mileage from their abase with confrontation than collaboration. I'm an employer, we take good care of our good employees, and we don't need a union telling us how to operate our business.
Doesn't make a bit of difference. My mentor was incredibly valuable and loyal. Didn't stop my employer from laying him off when they had to make cuts. And they did it in a disrespectful way, considering all the time he had spent there and all he contributed. Their terrible handling of the layoffs gave us a great reason to unionize. We all thought our employer was better than that. Push came to shove, they weren't. The union's job isn't to tell you how to operate your business. It's to protect your employees.
