I'm not going to express them an opinion on this until I read the particular justifications. I know that's a dangerous process, but so be it.

I will say I take particular delights in the announcement came while Peter Navarro is in prison. Hopefully he can't even read about it

70 percent of US steel consumption already comes from US steel manufacturers, 60 percent of foreign steel is already tariffed, and the military only needs a tiny fraction of what’s produced here for their new planes, boats etc.
Not sure how semi conductors came into the convo, but we just had a massive government outlay to try and win that war.
This a publicity stunt, not much more.

    Not triggered in the least!
Just find it comical how all the critics and name calling of Trump and the tariffs he enacted, you know the ones that Biden didn't rescind, are now supporting them and say they may be needed and a good thing.

It’s pandering to unions for sure, but targeting steel for “protection” isn’t necessarily a dumb policy choice. I think everyone would agree steel production probably falls under “national security”. Sort of like chips and semi-conductors. Which is not to say we should be 100% protectionist towards domestic production. But that we should definitely not become reliant on China. We should have our own production, and trade freely with allies.

China apparently is 4% of imports. Is that a threat? Eh. I think the net cost of this ends up much smaller than the Chips Act, which was a straight subsidy. I think stuff like this should be backed with numbers. If they are “dumping” illegally then make the case. I’d be concerned if China started hitting larger share, but not sure 4% is a huge risk.

In either case, Trump is still calling for “across the board 60% tariffs” against China. He also calls for tariffs against allies (dude has a thing against German autos for.. reasons). So if you think bumping steel tariffs to 25% would be dumb policy, you must think all of that’s batshit insane.

Like who are you talking about here? I imagine the people who think tariffs are bad on this board still think that.

It should be noted that you are providing negative ratings to my posts bashing this policy proposal. So I find it comical that you are trying to claim to find inconsistency comical.

If the cccp steel is low grade then it should cost less and the market would sort it out.

I like my low grade cccp steel on my dumpsters. I like my high grade American steel on my trucks.

I think I would prefer forcing all federal steel purchases having to be made by us manufactures. Bridges and ships and government building and the like to tariffs but I am not a politician.

There's probably already some mechanism in place that puts a priority on domestic steel for stuff like this. The downside is what I used to see when I worked in the defense industry. Inflate your pricing for govt bids, because you know they're buying domestic and you can rip them off

I don't recall saying that Trump tariffs were good? I just find some of you now supporting tariffs where in the past when Trump did it, he was xenophobe, racist or any other derogatory term applied to him at the time. When American companies have to compete with state sponsored companies then yes, some sort of equaling of the playing field should take place. This steal tariff is probably a good thing. I never said it wasn't, I was commenting on how now it is good because it is Biden and when Trump did it was bad.

The least you could do is name names or provide receipts, and the prevailing anti-China mindset is still xenophobic and/or racist lol, so anyone who said that at the time was correct then too.

So do you support the Trump tariffs? Also, who is saying that they support these that previously opposed them?
