I’m a student at the Air War College, and we are on a regional security studies trip.

You could start an Air War College tradition. At the graduation ceremony you and your fellow graduates should sing "Ain't Gonna Study War No More." (Or do they already do it?)

I think we should drop Donald Trump in Iran behind enemy lines and let him destabilize Iran with his charisma and Rambo-like ability.

Any reason it couldn’t be both?

Israel started this. The Iranian attack was successful. Israel should not hit back or Iran will go after more sensitive targets that will hurt Israel economically. Won't be a surprise to see some Israelis leave the country after this attack.

Our ships in the arena knew instantly when the missiles and drones were launched, and the precise spot where they were launched from. Our ships have unbelievable capabilities in that regard.

I think Iran accomplished two things: (1) they got to send a message to their leadership and citizens that they will strike back when attacked, and given the pre-notice and defense planning opportunities, all without having to actually ratchet-up the already-simmering conflict; and (b) they got free intelligence, meaning that got a first-hand, real time account of precisely how Israel and her allies respond such attacks and their defensive capabilities.

Both sides have done plenty of bad things to each other over the years, but I wouldn’t say Israel started this thing with Iran when Iran has been providing an enormous amount of weapons and funds to Hamas and Hezbollah.

Israel has been poking Iran in the chest for 14 years. Iran finally got tired of it and initiated a small demonstration as to how they could cripple Israel if need be.

@uftaipan brought up a good point and I did some further reading. Iran’s military is formidable enough. Add in Russian and likely Chinese aid and it’s far from a walk in the park for Israel.

Poster posts come on man emoji. Likely meant to convey, “Come on, man! You know Iran is evil so the strike can in no way be characterized as achieving its objective because evil!”

I used to get the most unique hard to find "gifts" from my unnamed relative (for security reasons) when she was on similar trips. Ones you didn't request provenance for, but which are among my most valued collectibles.

It’s just tyranny of distance. The IDF is not designed for long-range strikes.

Any guesses on what Israel will do?

UK's Cameron, in Israel, says Israelis have decided to retaliate against Iran (msn.com)

"JERUSALEM/CAIRO (Reuters) - Israel has clearly decided to retaliate against Iran for missile and drone attacks, Britain's foreign minister David Cameron said during a visit to Israel on Wednesday, the starkest warning yet of another volley coming in regional escalation."

    +

"The Iranian missiles and drones launched on Saturday were mostly shot down by Israel and its allies, and caused no deaths and only minor damage. But Israel says it must retaliate to preserve the credibility of its deterrants. Iran says it considers the matter closed for now but will retaliate again if Israel does.

"It's clear the Israelis are making a decision to act," Cameron told reporters early in his visit to Jerusalem. "We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible."

Washington and other Western governments hope new economic sanctions against Iran will help persuade Israel to limit the scope of its retaliation. Cameron said Britain wanted to see coordinated sanctions against Iran by the Group of Seven big democracies, which are meeting this week in Italy.

Israel may yet do something, although that it has done nothing to date could indicate confusion and/or infighting, but it’s not clear how it can “maintain the credibility of its deterrents.”

Iran has blown a big hole in that illusion.

Frankly, I’m a little puzzled by this. Iran is and has been their chief nemesis in the region for decades. I know they are typically fighting Iranian proxies in close range, but kill the body and the head will die.

Are they? Well, Iran isn’t a walk in the park, but there are no excuses for Israel to not have that capability. So, it’ll essentially be the U.S. versus Iran. Can’t wait.

It’s not for a lack of desire on Israel’s part. We can spin tall tales about Israel’s invincibility in the region. But Israel knows the score.

But never mind Israel, I surmise that the U.S. would fare poorly in a direct confrontation with Iran.
