Excellent article about Bryce Lovett, a 3 star recruit making great strides for playing time in year two. I have always said that offensive linemen are "made, not born" The NFL is littered with low draft picks and free agents, who took the physical and mental side of their craft seriously. I will be watching Lovett's progress throughout this season. From scout team to two-deep: Bryce Lovett pushing for starting spot in year two | GatorCountry.com
RG may have been the OL’s biggest question mark going into spring with a failed OT as RG1 and a struggling RFR OT moving to RG2. Post spring they both looked good in the O&B game with Lovett looking like a future stud. It's nice when a plan comes together.
I have never been a fan of fattening up your offensive linemen at the expense of fitness. The overweight guys tend to wear down quickly and are succeptible to injury
Brevard County has been very good to us in the trenches with Lyons also looking like a stud. We had Jaewon Taylor, a great one, and then Richie Leonard as starters also. We need to grab a receiver this year from Cocoa High and their QB.
Lovett was 17 when he arrived 12 mos ago. Assuming he stays at UF, Imagine the changes this person will make with 4 seasons and a redshirt year. He is just getting warmed up. He is the 3rd Gator to come out of Rockledge HS. Spurrier had 2, Derek Walker OL and Marcus Oquendo-Johnson OLB.
You have have been thinking of Reggie Nelson and Joe Cohen (I certainly was), but they were from Melbourne Palm Bay.
We need Lovett to save us from 'penalty-waiting-to-happen' Damieon George. From On3: "Florida slid Damieon George from tackle to guard. George lacked the speed to play tackle, resulting in him leading the team in penalties last season. From what we’ve gathered this spring, he’s struggled to adjust playing inside. While you don’t have to deal with pass rushers as much, the linemen are stronger and get on you faster when you’re playing guard."
Yea Rockledge, Cocoa and Melbourne kinda all run together. Just surprised that we’ve only had 3 from Rockledge all these years.
It hasn't been a huge talent producer, but we did miss on Jashaun Corbin who went to FSU. I think that Marcus Maye could have gone to Rockledge High too, but he went to Holy Trinity Episcopal instead. Palm Bay was a hot spot for a short while, and then there was a lull in the county until the new coach at Cocoa High convinced the basketball players to get on the football field, and now everybody has an aunt or grandma in Cocoa or a mom with a job in Cocoa to be able to put them in Cocoa High for football.
