Everything is different than it was 71 years ago. I know that I am. My only point is, who overthrew a democratically elected government in 1953, which set in motion all that eventually led to the "strategic situation" today? For all we know, Iran would have still been a democracy in 2024. To quote a line from Hemingway, "Isn't it pretty to think so?"

I’ve been vocal supporter of IDF including how they have handled the ground portion and will stay that way. In my opinion IRAN sent them a softball to knock down with a clear effort to de escalate. Israel should say they can counter at a time and place of their choosing and just leave it be and focus on rooting out Hamas. This was not a real attack. Iran knew full well IDF and the US would knock every one of them down.

Agree. Hope Israel's response leaves Iran wondering WTH just happened.

I think deep down, this is what Biden wants. He can feign diplomacy, but he’s not this stupid.

I think Biden is serious about no further retaliation, for two reasons. One, he has understandably had enough of Netanyahu. And two, the U.S. has clearly forgotten or rather has chosen to ignore the U.S. policy statement made most recently, I think, by then President Obama, that "we will never allow Iran to have nuclear weapons." If it doesn't already have them by now, the present policy of the U.S. is to sing "Que sera, sera," or to say to Iran, "Welcome to the club."

I was not suggesting another Israeli attack. I was suggesting a (very limited) U.S. attack on Iran itself. The example I gave was taking out a single weapon system such as an SA-20. The purpose would be to demonstrate to Iran our capability in the event of further escalation. They have “warned” Israel. I think “warning” them right back would be appropriate. I have a very real feeling that Russia has oversold the capabilities of the IADS that Iran and Russia uses. A demonstration that we could penetrate either at will and with impunity might be useful as a deterrent to further escalation.

Of course, I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s just what I would advise, given the limited information I have access to at the moment.

Notice how Iran announced its plan to counter-attack and basically mapped out its gameplan, giving Israel and its allies ample time and intel to prepare ?

My surmise is that Iran only sought to demonstrate that a modest fraction of its drones and missiles could overwhelm Israel’s vaunted AD and paralyze Israel’s backbone, its airfields.

    Agreed. Symbolic attack.

Seems like that has major backfire potential.

Of course. Again, I have only access to the same information as anyone else. My class is on a trip to East Asia at the moment, so I’m not getting the updates we usually get about what’s going on. In my opinion, though, you have to weigh the risk of doing nothing as much as doing something. I am concerned that a message we intend as forbearance is willfully received by Iran (and Russia) as a signal of weakness or, worse, that we are unable to act. A very light tap to demonstrate ability and will to strike back might be the best course of action. But like I said, I doubt such a thing is in the works.

We didn’t need Iran to announce their plans, we already had the intelligence and shared with our partners

The question is did we have that intelligence on purpose or was it discovered while still top secret.

Not sure what the difference is. Our intelligence gathering is top secret. We weren’t handed the information.

So when you post ridiculous factually incorrect shit like this do you feel shame? Or do you just continue on like it never happened and hope nobody noticed your lack of credibility?

Actually, it demonstrated that Iran can overwhelm Israeli and allies AD if it so chooses. Israel and allies expended, by one reckoning, $1.3 billion in jet fuel, weaponry and logistics just to take a swing at an Iranian softball.
