Great news from one of our celebrated transfers. At the time he was visiting the Gators for a possible transfer to Gainesville, Joey Slackman was one of the highest rated recruits in the portal... I remember people laughing at me becasue I said he's (right now) the number one transfer player in the portal. I knew that lofty distinction would change, and so did everyone else, but they thought he'd be downgraded to nowhere near the top. I had been reading on him and I knew better.

Now it seems that my thoughts about his skills might be coming to fruition. At least his leadership skills are polished, but I'm sure he will prove it ON the field. Other players don't respect pretenders and Joey in NO PRETENDER, and he has everyone's respect... respect he has already earned in practice that he will prove out on game day this coming season.

Although the Gators returned a pair of defensive lineman in Caleb Banks and Cam Jackson, there has been improved competition along the interior throughout the spring following the arrival of a talent from perhaps an unlikely place: the Ivy League.

Shortly following the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Gators added 6-foot-3.5 graduate student Joey Slackman just prior to Early Signing Day, an addition that has been widely praised by Slackman's newfound coaches and teammates in the time since his arrival in Gainesville.

"He came on an official visit. I'll tell you, I wasn't expecting the height and length that walked in the door, but more importantly, when this guy started engaging our staff and people throughout the organization, he made an impression. He left an impression. This guy's got leadership. He's got a motor, he's driven, he's ambitious, and he's got a plan. But the number one thing I would say about Joey, our players love the guy. This guy leaves campus after an official visit, and I'm getting calls and texts every day about Joey Slackman and how, 'man, we've got to get that guy on our team'," Napier said on Dec. 20. "I think just his personality and demeanor resonated with our players, all parts of our team, not just that position group, but offensive players, specialists, defensive players. So I was really impressed with Joey, and certainly excited about getting him here and getting to work."

Thanks for sharing these articles. Slackman has great DL skills due to wrestling, and I cannot wait to see his impact in the SEC. Clearly, though, this is not just about him. His positive effect on the DL is apparent!

Wrestlers (if they have quickness too) make good LBs and D-lineman, IMHO.

Yes, I agree, and I believe he will have a very productive upcoming season. And, he will clearly impact the DL play of all the players!
