We do know that Trump's businesses get most of their financing through Russian banks, thanks to a verbal slip-up by son Eric. We also know that Trump had big plans for building in Russia. We don't know what kind of leverage being Trump's banker gives Putin over Trump. We don't know what shell corporations Trump might have set up to hide his business transactions in Russia. You would have to be pretty gullible to believe that Putin has no leverage over Trump. Trump republicans are tripping all over themselves trying to find shady business dealings by Biden, and all you have so far is some minor-level influence peddling by his son. Meanwhile, Trump is very supportive of the military actions of a dangerous country with a habit of invading other countries, and he gets most of his financing through that country's banks. I’d like to believe that, but I don’t. Putin has proven far more resilient to any agency by his key stakeholders than we believed. This Administration falsely believed that the economic measures would be more effective by targeting the comfort and lifestyle of the oligarchs supporting Putin. He has kept them in line by hook or by crook to a far greater extent than Sullivan et al imagined possible. I’m not saying we shouldn’t also be doing the economic measures. I’m all for it. But military measures are the only way to decisively swing this thing. That includes material assistance but should not stop there.
