Grocery Store Inflation

In 2020, we likely didn't need as much due to the decline in employment. But right now, we have over 2 million more job openings than unemployed people. Taking into account the dynamics that result from filling those positions with people, we are likely in need of millions more that the legal immigration system can't provide. And yes many of those jobs are in food preparation and agricultural industries (while others are in other related industries like transportation, warehousing, and food retail).

 

I am a conservative. I would like the U.S. government to open a consulate just north of Mexico City for processing several million immigrants per year (provide whatever incentive it takes for Mexico to go along with the plan--it helps their people bring money back to Mexico legally and safely, so they should be in favor of it). Fingerprint them (check their backgrounds, inspect for indications of MS-13 and other organized crime involvement), have a dog check their luggage for drugs, and inspect for weapons just like they do at the airport. Then run a set of train tracks from the consulate to El Paso, TX. Operate a non-stop train daily, or twice a day, from the consulate to El Paso (850 miles--at 90 mph, it would arrive in 10 hours or less). Then run buses from El Paso to San Diego, San Antonio, and Houston, and anywhere else that needs large numbers of immigrants for labor. Charge the immigrants a small fee for the visa and the train ride. Illegal border crossings will drop to near zero, and will most likely include all of the drug smugglers, snakeheads, and criminals who couldn't take the train.

Problem solved.

 

At 40k repatriated undocumented immigrants a year, between 2017 and 2021, that should equal 200k. 40k each for '17, '18, '19, '20, and '21. But the Pew Center has 900k returning from one country, Mexico, alone. Which data point is correct? Is this not a data accuracy issue? And why are you laughing and/or crying about this?

We should know how many immigrants we have in this country. We should know how many are working, and how many in school. We should know how many are permanently returning home, and how many jobs employers are filling that could be filled by immigrants. We don't. All we know is we have more job openings than currently unemployed, and have around 8 million undocumented in the work force already.

This should tell us these workers are a necessity. And the number of immigrants returning home also tells us we need more coming in to replace those leaving. How many is the right number? Don't know, because we have poor data and tracking.

Then possibly add a few other elements. Specify a time limit to stay (or recertify), evict those who commit felonies, accurately levy taxes, penalize the holy hell out of anyone employing undocumented people, dramatically improve and require e-verify (or similar).

Do these things and we could reasonably discuss repealing/modifying birth-right citizenship and DACA.

But these things don't happen because of BOTH parties equally, and big business. It's miserable to see Republicans fail to even TRY to address the issue just so some of them (their POTUS candidate especially) can score racist political points by demonizing illegals.

I’ll be generous and accept your 900,000. In fact, just for the sake of argument I will give you an additional 11% to make it 1,000,000. So 7,000,000 come in. But since 1,000,000 (14%) go back we’re all good. Total nonsense. You’re just quibbling. Whether 100,000 or 1,000,000 go back it really doesn’t even begin to correct the problem.

If you logged into your investment account and find that someone hacked in and took 100% of your money, would you be good if over the next decade they gave you back a total of 14% of it? Of course you wouldn’t.

 

If we can't be sure of the repatriation numbers, how can we be sure of how many are actually here?

 

If your post want simple nonsense you would also add that it is miserable that Dems will open the border for 7,000,000 illegal immigrants yo come in with no plan to house, feed, give medical care, or educate any of them.


I’m the first to agree that both parties are at blame for our immigration mess, but you’re not being honest if all you want out of this is to bash one candidate and call him erroneous names because he wants to get control of things and process immigrants legally into the us where their skills are needed.

There's also a difference in the numbers of undocumented living here. Pew has about 11 million. Fair at over 15 million. Which is it?

If you're unsure of how many leaving, how can you be sure of how many coming? And how many staying? And again, how many do we need to fill open jobs?

Actually, it's worse than that. The majority of republicans in Congress (including republican leadership) AT THAT TIME believed that Trump's wall was a waste of money, so they made up obstacles to stall Trump and his wall. It wasn't until Trump was out of office and started persuading the Trump-worshippers who walk among us that the wall was needed, and they should vote out anyone who did not loudly support the wall.

 

Discussions on Biden’s successful economy should include a mention of our deficit. We're not paying our way. Similarly, discussions on inflation under Biden should mention supply chain delays caused by the Covid pandemic.

On the other hand it's rather obvious which candidate has been bought and paid for by larger donors who have donated anonymously through Super PACs.

 

Some of that would be automatic. You get a visa when you are processed by a consulate. The visa specifies how long you can stay. Eviction should be automatic with a felony, after jail time is served.

The other positive about the consulate idea is that you would have a U.S. government property almost 1,000 miles away from the border. When someone is captured sneaking across the border, you can put him on the train and send them off to Mexico City, instead of turning them loose a few steps from the border to see if they can find another way in. They would have to take a long bus ride or something to get back to the border to attempt to sneak across again. At some point, it's not going to be worth the effort.
