You are correct that Trump started out bad, and it got worse. I think you have to factor out Covid when you compare the spending of the two presidents. However, even if you give Biden a pass for 2021 and 2022 for Covid, you would have to explain 2023's spending. Deficit spending should have gone down in 2023 compared to 2022. The Ukraine War was a minor drain the last two years (less than $100 billion total, and a lot of that coming in the form of old tanks and Bradleys, which should have already been paid for). Biden has spent more than $132 billion in student loan forgiveness. Biden has had to give up a lot to appease the republican Congress, but I don't think that fully explains it. There is also inflation, especially the 8.6% that we experienced in 2021, but I don't think that fully explains it. I think that Biden and Congress just got comfortable spending large amounts of money, and haven't woken up to what this is doing to the national debt and potential future inflation. And no one has lifted a finger to adjust entitlements, because that is nearly politically suicidal.

    Year - Deficit (trillion)
    2015 - 0.44 (lowest under Obama)
    2016 - 0.58 (Obama)
    2017 - 0.67 (Trump)
    2018 - 0.78 (Trump)
    2019 - 0.98 (Trump)
    2020 - 3.13 (Trump - Covid)
    2021 - 2.78 (Biden - Covid)
    2022 - 1.38 (Biden - Covid?)
    2023 - 1.69 (Biden - ??? )

Another fact easily picked up from the information above: All three of Trump's non-Covid years were a smaller deficit than all three of Biden's years. And the deficit increased under Biden in 2023 compared to 2022.

Trump was a horrible president. But Biden seems to have a little spending problem. Wouldn't you agree?

If you are referencing my post then two things:

    1. Trump gets no pass on spending from me.

    2. I blame both parties for the debt mess that we are in. No single party could F things up this bad by themselves.

Speaking of inanities, your post references deficits, not debt. Big difference and also the subject of this thread. Isn’t it shocking how little some American adults know that they would interchange two different words and not even realize that they’ve changed the topic.

Or were you just checking to see if any of the ignorant people here would notice your shocking mistake?

BTW, enjoy the claim you made while you can. Biden’s deficits are growing, not shrinking.

My post doesn't even include the word "debt", much less reference it.

Isn't it shocking how poor some American adults' reading comprehension is?

Or were you just checking to see if any of the ignorant Trump-affiliated people here would hopefully fail to notice you stating something that was clearly untrue?

Why thank you. Mine was crossing up two (obviously) words. I can fix mine and it will look fine. Unfortunately for you, yours will still ridiculous because you had an error in logic.

    You make a valid point.

One could nitpick that higher interest rates and the student loan giveaway (which I am no fan of) are roughly the difference between 2022 and 2023 deficits. But you are correct that 2023 was, just like every pre-covid Trump year even moreso, the proper time to reduce the federal deficit. So your point is taken.

That said, I continue having a hard time not responding to any Trump supporter (not implying you) complaining about deficit spending without a thorough look inward. To say nothing of Trump's apparent plans to cut taxes further upon a potential 2nd term.

    Just stop embarrassing yourself.

You misread my post, tried to be a smart*** with your response, and made yourself look like a fool.

I transposed a word but had solid logic. You transposed logic. You really aren’t in any position to tell anyone to stop embarrassing themselves.

You are right in that I was being a smartass though.

So Biden has had a bigger deficit in three years than Trump had in four? Very interesting?

I don’t care to quibble on spending as all presidents and congresses have been out of control for 40 years. I do give Clinton props for having the good sense to work with Gingrich and get things lined up.

I agree with the earlier post that overall he was not a good president, but on spending he did very well.

Nonsense! Bill Clinton was very busy inspecting and checking the White House interns, and giving them the attention they deserved! How dare you smear his character!

And you were one of the ones who were probably cheering for every penny of that and more, but now are happy to use it as a club.

I’ve been quite clear on my thoughts on the foolishness of our, and most of the world’ response to Covid. In case you missed it it disgusted me. We will be dealing with the negative after-effects of listening to the Little Idiot(Fauci) for at least another decade.

Bush barely won the electoral college, yes? Why is it that only cons seem to be able to lose the popular vote by millions, yet win the electoral college? What does that say about our democratic rebublic?

And there is abundant evidence that Gore would have won FL had every vote been counted objectively. Of course, W's brother just happened to be Governor of FL at the time (how very convenient!) and was able to push the Roberts court to stop the counting only halfway through the manual count in greater Palm Beach.

This in contrast to the 2020 result that was upheld in mulitple swing states after multiple recounts and recounts of recounts including by GOP operatives. And don't forget the dozens of court decisions, again including by many con judges, that found absolutely no evidence of fraud.

Wow, your guy Trump really screwed the pooch on that one too then, didn't he? He was ultimately in charge, wasn't he? Or was it PRESIDENT Fauci?

Too bad he wasn't able to apply some of his stable genius to appointing someone better to head our response, or to come up with a legitimate response of his own. Besides repeatedly telling OUTRIGHT LIES about covid to the American public.

Hard to believe that someone in charge who so miserably failed such a major national challenge could be even considered for a repeat term in office, no?

It’s kind of like Obama, in that he inherited a complete mess.

Of course it’s fair to say the deficit should be back under a trillion by now with a strong underlying economy, or if not under a trillion the blip back up is disappointing. Obama at least chipped away at the W disaster every year, with the deficit blip back up at the very end but still a strong economy on the way out the door. Not going to argue your points as I think you laid it out pretty well. There’s no reason for the deficit to tick back up in a strong economy, even factoring in Ukraine.

But I’d point out it’s actually Congress that passes a budget, not the President. Kind of weird the Congress flips Republican and the deficit blips back up in the wrong direction. Not saying the change in direction is “their fault” exactly, but it shows how useless and full of shit they are.
