My recollection is that Douglas' missed tackle rate from his previous two stops was high despite good athleticism. Harris and AA have their work cut out for them.

I hate the 4-2-5 Defense. It requires 2 things to be really good: Star position and a DL that can really get after the QB, neither of which the Gators had the last 3 seasons. Its a terrible D against a good running attack unless the Star can basically be as good as a 3rd LB. It also doesn't do much good to have an extra DB when the line can't pressure. A good QB will still pick that secondary apart given too much time.

 

The current on the job training for the Gator DC has proven to be an abomination. So Nap brings in an Executive Assistant on Defense to help tutor Dough Boy and you really think talent over comes woeful coaching? Proof is in the 23’ pudding. For 24’ you will be able to gauge how all that TALENT is being COACHED sometime about MIDNIGHT on 8/31. I hope I do not become asphyxiated holding my breath.

I don’t hate the defense, but we haven’t had a good star in a few years and our linebackers have been weak and we have not had any elite pass rusher either. We don’t set the edge for runs. One scheme may be better than the other but I don’t believe our defense could run any scheme. I don’t blame the coaches as much either as our talent level has been bad on defense. From Napier’s recruiting, we have a handful of juniors, a bunch of sophomores and a bunch of freshmen. We are still a very inexperienced team, because Napier’s first class was very small. This is the first year I expect to start to see some experience show.

I just don't like it as a base defense because effective Star (what used to be called the Nickel-back) players don't grow on trees. Back in the Spurrier day's they ran the 4-3 (with three REAL LB's) unless it was an obvious passing down. They tried to shut down the run, get a lead and then pin their ears back and pass rush when the other team tried to catch up. Unlike Muschamp, Spurrier knew that scoring, making the other team one-dimensional, and getting a lead, not controlling the ball were keys to winning games.

Against teams that want to establish the run, coming out in the 4-2-5 is just dumb. What really irks me is that they showed that they could scheme to shut down the run just one game before against UT and then put a garbage game plan together against a team that they should have known would try to establish the run from the outset. Our guys looking like they had never played tackle football before was the icing on the crap cake we had to eat.

it was a crap scheme, but our boys did not come to play. They didn’t look like they wanted to hit anybody, so I don’t think scheme would’ve helped them at all. 43 is great if that linebacker can cover but in today’s game with all the spread crap Even linebacker pretty much Hass to be a star no matter what they call him. You just have to be able to do both no matter what you call his position
