More often than not our most horrific gun crimes have originated from easy access to legally owned guns of a family member of the shooter.

 

That almost always seems to be the case with mass shooters and domestic violence crimes as well “road rage”. The stat says 80%, but even that seems low.

Street crime on the other hand tends to be stolen or trafficked guns.

I don’t think there’s anything profound in any of that. Crimes of passion are likely to start with a legally acquired weapon. The habitual criminal can’t legally buy, so they have to look to other sources. Whether that’s stealing from some idiots glovebox or buying from an illicit dealer the abundance lowers the barrier to the criminal.

 

Shit unfortunately happens, especially when guns are widely available and easy for dangerous people to access.
