I swear, the regulars here could take lessons from a 2 year old on how to stay focused on a topic.
It makes this forum unreadable when everything is so emotional always and comes back to the same three topics.

The video looked ghastly and it’s a wonder more have not perished. Maybe very light traffic at the time ?

Harbor pilots placed a mayday call to MDOT to alert them that there had been a loss of control of the ship and that they could not rule out the possibility of a bridge strike, and MDOT closed the bridge to new entering traffic when they did so.

The ship's pilot radioed a mayday when the ship lost power, warning of a possible bridge impact. It sounds like law enforcement was able to stop traffic at both ends in time. They're not 100% sure that all cars cleared the bridge, but so far it looks like only the workers weren't able to be cleared in time.

    (Ben beat me to it)

Why didn't they get the workers off?

Even if you are now doubling (?) the traffic load? Isnt the 45 minutes factoring in normal traffic conditions?

I agree but who did it? Did the police block the road? Were there crossing barriers that were dropped down to stop traffic? I assume they don't have people at either end of the bridge to do that but maybe so?

It sounds like they had a cop close to both sides that rushed there. One (the one on the inner loop) was on tape saying that he would go get the workers when somebody showed up to keep traffic stopped, but the bridge collapsed a few seconds later.

I heard they are leaning towards bad fuel which shut down engines. They fired up some back up diesels (would explain the puffs of black smoke) and tried to drop anchor but too little too late

Interesting. You can have an algae bloom in diesel that will clog up your filters/system. I'd assume they have protocol in place to prevent that but you never know. It could also have been a breach in the fuel tank that allowed water to mix, but that seems like they'd have diagnosed that sooner.

Yeah as someone that used to have a diesel auxiliary, the old adage was - if you're having engine trouble, check your fuel. If that's not it, check your fuel again.

I can only image the filtration / cleaning systems on such a vessel, but bad fuel finds a way.

The only vehicles that would take the long way around the beltway would be oversized vehicles or those carrying hazardous cargoes. The others would be using one of two tunnels. That being said the loss of the bridge will undoubtedly increase traffic and slow vehicles transiting the tunnels which already tend to backup during rush hour.

Report this morning stated that troopers started onto the bridge to get them off when it collapsed.

It is definitely going to lengthen time. The biggest impacts will be very local for the eastern sections of Baltimore County and for Hazmat transport. Most others could move through the tunnels (although, it should be noted that there are tolls associated with those tunnels). Those tunnels will now back up a bunch. If you are driving Hazmat into the northeast, you could either go around Baltimore on 695 the other way, drive through Baltimore to I83, or get on 50 and go across the Bay Bridge in Annapolis. None are great options, but traffic shouldn't double anywhere due to the options.
