I'm always amazed at how so many fans know what constitutes a good position coach or what exactly good position coaching even is. As mentioned before, we did well in 22 and bad in 23. Making indictments of the coaching seems to ignore the handicap placed on the team with the unexpected loss of Goodwin. That's not to say there aren't valid criticisms but there were injury and personnel factors all year with last year's line. Would love to hear some in depth analysis some time from the people who deem position coaches as good or bad...
All they know is that there are two of them and the line was bad last year. End of story. I don’t see us having a great line this year either but maybe solid can be hoped for.
I’ve been around long enough to see what a difference there is in position coaches on the recruiting front. Some make instant connections and your hear kids say father figure or shows me the love and contacts me every day versus others we usually talk every two weeks. It is obvious when a position coach does not like recruiting. Kids can tell and fans can tell. Some get old and rely on reputation. Coach Prime has never made a recruiting visit to a kids home and Coach Smart and Sark made 150 plus home visits last year. Interestingly Chip Kelly made only 60 by comparison. These things make a difference in recruiting and long-term success. One simply outperforms, outworks, and had more passion and energy for recruiting than the other.
