As Tyson Foods announced it is shuttering an Iowa pork factory that will lead to more than 1,000 lost jobs, the company reportedly met with and hired migrants in Manhattan for positions at a Tennessee plant.

After announcing it will join with the Tent Partnership for Refugees, staff from the poultry heavyweight engaged with asylum seekers at the New York office of Chobani yogurt, whose CEO Hamdi Ulukaya founded the charity.

At least 87 migrants from Central and South America were hired in two separate groups, according to Tribune News Service. The same report said Tyson employs about 42,000 immigrants and that the company's corporate social responsibility executive said, "We would like to employ another 42,000 if we could find them."

"All we know is that they are firing American workers and hiring illegal aliens to replace them. This is the entire point of illegal immigration — and Republicans, we've got to hammer this point home."

You realize that the Perry, Iowa plant was likely heavily immigrant (many of which are likely asylum seekers) too, like just about all meatpacking plants, right?

Tyson Foods contributes double to Republican candidates for office what they give Democrats. It's probably pretty safe to assume these politicians are aware of what Tyson Foods wants them to do....

Hint : Provide them with means to find abundant cheap labor, (illegal) immigrant or not.

(It's just a fun side fact that these same Republican politicians make political hay by then scare-mongering voters about immigration.)

Maybe the immigrants work harder than the Americans, or are more focused or safety conscious. How many Americans grow up thinking that working in a pork factory is their dream job? If you wind up in the pork factory cutting meat, something has gone wrong with your career along the way. Same thing with picking fruits and vegetables, or working a roofing job. It's unpleasant. Yes, the factories should be required to hire legal immigrants. Yes, we need a new system to process immigrants from the south to bring in enough laborers, and keep out the criminals. But we do need immigrants.

Maybe none of the Iowa workers were willing to relocate? By definition, migrants will quickly "migrate" to where ever there is work.

Someone do the math for me. You mentioned the potential of a thousand loves jobs followed by the hiring of 87 immigrants. Maybe it's just me but those numbers don't seem to add up

Pretty long commute every day from Iowa to Tennessee. I can see why those workers didn't want the job.

Migrant workers should have all the same minimum standards. Obviously small contractors and businesses like lawn care and construction probably cut corners and pay in cash or under the table. That’s wrong too, but I think the adage “you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip” applies in most of those cases. Big corporations on the other hand should pay heavy fines *if* they are paying under the table or if they are displacing legal workers.

No different from when tech workers were getting displaced by H1B1 from India, and this was happening at some of the most profitable companies. Displacing full time U.S. workers with foreign “temps” isn’t supposed to happen. Republicans not only didn’t give a shit about that, they pretty much encouraged it. So excuse me if I don’t buy the concern trolling here

But as this is a non-skilled and non-Union job in Iowa, I doubt the story is as presented anyway (“American Dream”, yeah right).

It may be the American dream to immigrants who come from poverty.

Don’t know if so. But I do know that a full time minimum wage job to many immigrants is the American Dream.

I know what hard work is. In the early 70s during the recession I worked at US Phosphoric in Gibsonton Fl for about 6 months. I cleaned steel with a pick hammer and wire brush. We had to wear sweatshirts, long pants, eye protection, boots, and a hard hat due to the exposure to acid and other fumes from the plant exhaust stacks. It was the middle of summer and hot as hell. Because it was all I could find at the time I was grateful to have the job that payed me $1.85 an hour. I worked every bit of overtime I could, many times double shifts which is 16 hours. I’d take Dexedrine to stay awake at night. I came from a well off family and still felt fortunate. I can’t imagine what an immigrant feels coming from a far lesser well off place. I also worked for Antioch Roofing my days off from the fire department. We didn’t have a fancy lift. We carried shingles and tar paper on our shoulders up ladders. Not all of us went to college and straight to an AC job or one with great pay and benefits. When I read about how Americans are too lazy to work labor jobs I think back to when I was in my 20s and SMDH.

A weird thread on a lot of levels.
Knowing some people who work in their Iowa plants, it’s a mixture of native born and immigrant, leaning towards immigrant. In fact the people that have come in for a lot of those jobs have changed those towns drastically.
They closed it largely because the pork business is having one of its worst stretches on record, so they are consolidating. They had already closed several other plants. The people selling pigs in Iowa aren’t driving to Tennessee to sell their pigs, they will go to another plant nearby. So why Tennessee was mentioned with this, I don’t know, but I know.
So then why would Tyson be going to NYC for labor in Tenneseee? It would be light years more cost efficient to source it locally. The Bloomberg article headline on the exact same subject says “
Tyson Is Hiring New York Immigrants for Jobs No One Else Wants”

So yeah, maybe Fox isn’t always the best source for stuff like this.

How many people don't have these stories? Sure, a few total white glove kids were exceptionally spoilt. Otherwise, I gotta ask . . . did ya walk uphill to/from work in 10 feet of snow?

I actually drove pigs to one of the Tyson plants in Iowa, among other fun farm tasks, including walking soybean fields with a machete to kill random corn stalks. So I’ve got that on my resume.

Unemployment is at 3.9%. Most people on unemployment find jobs within 3 months of being laid off. And currently, there are 3 million more open jobs than there are unemployed. Anyone really think low wage meat factory work is something citizens are going to line up for?
