Wuss. lol. Whatever. Own it I say. Why is it a big deal to prove you’re of age?

L-O-L. Last I checked, I don't have to show my ID to smoke a cigarette in my house. (I don't smoke, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.) What right to privacy do I have while outside my home, in a private business, and trying to purchase their goods? Better yet, how do cigarettes implicate my right to receive expression? You keep comparing apples to oranges.

I'm not giving you parenting advice. I'm telling you to stop burdening other people's freedoms pursuing a goal that's never going to happen.

The issue isn't proving that I'm of age. I'm happy to click a button confirming I'm 18 years or old. I'm even willing to enter my birthdate. What I'm not willing to do is give these companies a picture of my ID or more intrusive personally identifying information than just a birthdate or confirmation that I'm 18+.

You keep demanding other people justify why these laws are bad. You are the one advocating for the government to burden our freedoms. Justify why they're good.

Meh. The fact that you want unregulated porn transactions is a point we will have to disagree on. Watch it all you want but I’d prefer age verification just like we do on all kinds of stuff. Your home is your castle but the transactions outside.. including digital is the states to control. Good luck.

    1. We're not talking about transactions. Pornhub is a free site.
    2. I never argued for porn or porn transactions to be "unregulated."
    3. I have explicitly said I am fine with minimally intrusive or unobtrusive age verification.
    4. You are trying to control what goes in my home. There is no transaction. And when I consume pornography, it happens inside my home. The state has no business exercising control over that.

I eagerly await your justification of these obtrusive age verification laws. Go ahead and demonstrate to all of us how this will stop children from accessing porn, how children accessing porn is causing widespread harm, why it is equitable to put these burdens on people who aren't the children's parents, and why all of these things outweigh the freedoms you are burdening.
That's not parenting advice, pal. An example of parenting advice would be me telling you to spank your child when he/she acts up.

Free. lol. It’s a commercial site, I’m sure it makes money advertising if it doesn’t sell anything.

I don’t have to convince your already made up mind that having reasonable restrictions are reasonable. It’s definitely not unconstitutional to require age verification but whether it has momentum, I don’t know.

Nice try on the weaseling out of parenting advice. I didn’t call you a pervert for porn advocacy, nor insinuate you’re grooming kids with porn. I’m simply advocating for age verification and that triggered you to insinuate shitty parenting and my part. It’s was right there. Was a bullshit comment.

Correct. Free. I'm not paying anything.

These laws impose content-based burdens on expression. That means strict scrutiny applies. There is nothing "reasonable" about the restrictions you're supporting. It also hasn't escaped me that you continue to defend "age verification" in a general sense rather than the specific age verification requirement at issue here.

You're not "simply advocating for age verification." You're advocating for a very specific type of intrusive age verification.

But I do apologize for insinuating that shitty parenting on your part. That was uncalled for.

I’m advocating for generally accepted age verification. Bars, convenience stores, strip clubs, movies all require the same age verification process, an ID, and state laws ban 3rd parties from keeping your information online.

I think my harder hurdle is defining what needs age verification. What if they blur it out, blah blah blah.. people are creative.

It’s not as simple as blocking a channel on a TV package dude.
There are dozens of free porn websites out there, you need to be a master programmer to prevent a kid from being able to access it.

Do you think that ordering things like vapes, THC, or alcohol should have multi step age verification?

    1. They really don't, though. I rarely get carded when buying alcohol (at a store or bar). Can't recall the last time a movie theater asked to see my ID.
    2. All of these places are physical locations outside the home!
    3. I don't trust these companies, and I don't trust these idiotic right-wing governments (that you're defending).

As are kids. They'll figure out how to get around age verification if they're motivated.

You can broadly filter website content through your router and also lock in SafeSearch via administrative controls.
Add a Content Filter to a Home Network | Tech Lockdown

Define "multi step age verification." I'm not sure what you mean. And when you say ordering, I'm assuming you mean online.

Whether it’s a location outside the home or in the home matters not.

If the law forbids minors from viewing porn it’s not really any different whether they watch it at home or at a movie theater.

Not all devices run through a home router, and yes there are third party software companies to monitor or block what minors can se, trouble is the kids often can find the hacks to go around them.

Yes I was referring to buying vapes, etc online.

IMHO it’s too bad that an adult might have to spend a bit more effort to watch online porn to keep it away from children. Cry me a river people can’t have easy porn access at home..

    Yeah, that's not correct.

Kids can figure out how to get around age verification too.

Except it doesn't keep it away from the children who are motivated to get to it. You're arguing in favor of burdening people's freedoms. It's on you to justify it. You haven't. There are effective tools for parents to keep porn away from children. And to the extent children can work around the tools, they can also work around the intrusive age verification process you're defending. So there's no real justification for this sort of law. Keep your nanny state. I'll keep my freedom.

When you buy cigarettes don’t you show your id to the clerk? For porn, who are you showing your id to? Entering proof of age on the internet opens the possibility that private data becomes available to any hacker

If you rent a car they have all your info too. Get a mortgage you are giving them images of nearly your whole life. People are willing to do it… just for the things they want enough to do it.

Just seems like asking to click a button isn’t much of a safeguard. It’s not like I’m a prude. I don’t care if adults access porn. It’s just too easy to access. As a parent you can’t be sure every single device at every single house your kid goes to and every one of their friends has security software in place. It’s an unfair fight.

There aren’t effective ways ways to keep it away from kids.

Not to shift the topic but I have numerous friends whose kids have bought vapes etc online, despite all those parental controls.

“Freedom for me to get porn when I want it and how I want it unfettered”, not sure but I don’t see that in the constitution.

The Gov makes all kids of rules for the public good, have you railed against seat belt laws with such vigor or is it just easy access porn?

Do you have minor kids? Or are they all grown?
Seems like you maybe speaking about things that in today’s world you don’t really have up to date info.

Funny city and I who don’t often agree seem to be in strong agreement here.

Exactly. And this age verification idiocy won't stop motivated kids either. They'll get around it. So all it really does is deter adults. As for the vapes, shouldn't your friends be able to tell the kids are buying them? Don't they have to have a credit card to buy things online? Unless they're buying those Visa gift cards at Walmart or the grocery store, I'd think you'd be able to quickly check the credit card statement and see.

Look up Reno v. ACLU and ACLU v. Ashcroft. It presents First Amendment issues. Additionally, those of us who live in Florida have an explicit right to privacy in the state constitution. The government requiring us to give our personally identifying information to access porn in our own homes would violate that right.

Seatbelt laws don't implicate the First Amendment or my right to privacy. The government doesn't get to invade my rights because some folks with kids consider it more convenient to burden other people than it is for them to monitor their own kids. This is the same sort of busted logic that has led to the idiotic book banning and the unconstitutional social media bans.

I remember the V Chip technology in the 90 was supposed to help parents monitor and regulate what their kids were watching in terms of violent and sexual content on tv. That made some sense to me, but I guess that didn’t take off for whatever reason.

With respect to internet sites, aren’t there ways for devices or apps to assist owners? For example, can the Covenant Eyes app used by the Speaker and his son simply be avoided by using a VPN? If so, why would anyone bother relying upon it?

That doesn't change with these right-wing laws you're supporting. One way or another, kids are going to access porn. That was true when I was a kid. It was true when people older than me on this board were kids. That's how it goes. We all turned out fine.

This law is about shaming adults and deterring them from watching porn. Like so many of their other awful anti-freedom laws, these right-wing governments are hiding behind "protect kids!" for the sake of legitimacy. The book banning isn't about protecting kids. The gender-affirming care bans aren't about protecting kids. And these anti-porn and anti-social media laws aren't about protecting kids.
