It's mental. The brain informs the body. Proprioception is real. His body is not responding well because of dissonance in his brain.
Sure, but as you mentioned in the thread that got whacked, his shooting form is inconsistent. Why is that?
Why do taller guys shoot worse than littler guys? If it's jist physical, long arms and legs, more variability of motion, less coordination then they should practice shooting a lot more from an early age. Both Free throws and long range.
I remember for Shaq, his hands were so big it was like shooting one of those old pizza mini final four basketballs they used to give away. He was basically shot putting his free throws.
Big hands, big feet, big balls....maybe... but these could all be advantages also. I'm guessing he spent most of his practice time in the paint. .
Agreed. Certainly you would hope to do better from the line, but Samuel's 9 for 23 was the approximate equivalent of shooting 4.5 out of 11.5 from the field. You would need to factor in any "and one" foul shots and any missed front ends of one-and-ones (if there were any; I don't recall) to get the exact equivalent. Not great, but not a disaster by any means. I was wondering if Bama might try some "hack-a-Shaq" on Samual yesterday when they were down 20 in the middle of the 2nd half. I would have tried it if I had been Bama's coach.
Samuel made all his free throws yesterday. He must have been able to read my post about the flaws in his free throw shooting before the Alabama moderator deleted it.
Samuel was money shooting free throws against both Alabama and A&M. The announcers mentioned that the coaches worked with him on his rhythm; one dribble, deep breath, shoot the ball.
Look at Matt Bonner or guys like Kevin McHale. Practiced every day in Bonners case hundreds of 3s and FTs every day (and still maintained a 4.0 gpa)
My theory is it has to do with the tendency for big guys to not use their legs in their FT shot (or the motion is disjointed). The big guys can so easily flick with their wrist, they just never develop the habit to shoot from the ground up from the FT line. Using the big muscles= more consistency. For good free throw shooters, the wrist and forearms aren't the source of the power to get the ball to the basket in their FT shot.
This is more than a theory. The big guys who get their legs into their legs shots shoot a much softer ball. It’s a key aspect of shooting a basketball.
By the way, I am still pissed at the dm. See definition below. Samuel took 23 free throws and missed 14 of them. I rewatched all 23 free throws, analyzed them, started a new thread and wrote my post. The dm decided that Samuel’s free throws did not warrant a separate thread. “dm” means deleting moderator.
Here ya go, @tampajack1 : You posted this: Here is what I am seeing. He has 2 different ways that he shoots his free throws, one of which is good and the other of which sucks. In both of them, he gets a reasonably good push with his legs. On his good form, he rocks his shooting hand/arm back to the center of his forehead and then forward and releases the ball. On his bad form, he rocks his shooting hand/arm back towards his forehead and then lifts his hand up higher and back over the top of his head before moving his hand forward and releasing the ball. Not only is the latter form terrible, but it screws up the good form because he can’t figure out how hard to shoot the ball on his release on both forms. And your two replies: 1) Gee, I am getting to be very knowledgeable in basketball. We all know that Tampajack knows basketball and I agree with him. So, I must be learning something reading his posts. Samuel does have 2 different ways that he shoots his free throws. 1) it goes in 2) it doesn't go in. 2) What I see is that on many of his free throws, the ball doesn’t get in the basket and in others the ball goes in the basket. =========== Please try to post in existing threads with the same theme. It gets too chaotic when we have multiple threads on the same subject. We want the forum to be easier for members and visitors to follow and participate in. It should have been merged....but I don't know how to do that yet - sorry.
