Man so deep in the season I don’t know how you work on it now, but the free-throw shooting is our Achilles heel I believe. They’re basically daring Samuel to take shots from 8 feet. And they foul him every chance they get. I think the announcers said he had the Most missed free throws in a single game of any player in SEC history. Scary statistic. Hack a Shaq is back!’

I don't know how you shoot less than 50% ever. At that point it's either mental or a lack of focus. Repeatability is the goal of a good free throw shot and when you go full speed to a dead stop it can be much more difficult to recreate the same motion every time due to hear rate, breathing etc but even then, 60% should be the floor if you have your head in the game. Just my opinion from experience.

It's def mental for Tyrese. Can see it in his facial expressions & body language. Last night I thought Pullin made a great adjustment early in both halves. GA was giving up a bubble of space near the FT line and after Samuel clanged a couple shots, Pullin cleared Samuel out, got in that space, and made some shots.

Free throws and turnovers seemed fixed for a minute. Hoping we get well again.

Hack a Shaq worked so well, he only won four NBA championships.

Yes he had the most missed FTs….but you’ve got to be playing well to be fouled so much and have an opportunity to miss that many.

Missed or made…..he finished with 17 pts and 15 boards……and the 15-15 mark had only been cleared one other time in SECT history.

And the team scored 85. So the missed FTs didn’t hurt us that bad.

And you are right on repeatability…..but the stopping starting, being hacked and banged all night….hardly allows for rhythm.

He knows he could shoot a little better, but looking at the big picture, he was dominant. If he could get that 12 footer to fall he’d be unstoppable.

He needs to make his first one tonight to settle him down a bit. It was in his head last night.

Didn't we miss 18 free throws. Make half of those and be blow out Ga. by 14. It definitely reduces the stress when you make them.

For the record, the record he set for most missed free throws was in SEC tournament play history, not SEC history.

    Yeah, just stay aggressive, Samuel!

I think I was even more frustrated with all the tip-in tries and shots at the rim that didn't go in. Some of it was just bad luck (the rim was unkind), but a lot of it was lack of any touch around the rim.* Make a decent percentage of those and yesterday's game is not so close. Samuel has the best touch of our big men right now. Handlogten seemed better at tip-ins earlier in the season; he didn't look too good on offense yesterday.

    * - Makes me wistfully remember the beautiful touch around the rim of the late, great Gator Ronnie Williams. :( i still fondly remember throwing him a couple of lob passes in the post for baskets in a pickup game in the old Alligator Alley.

so, I started a thread explaining Tyrese Samuels free throw shooting form, and why he misses his free throws. Not only did a moderator shut down that thread, but my post on that thread, and a few others have completely disappeared.

Why start a new thread.....when we already had this one?

I didn’t even notice this thread. Regardless, my thread was specific to Tyrese Samuels’s shooting form and why he misses his free throws. I thought that it would be educational to posters and worthwhile to read rather than the typical shoot a 1000 more free throws in practice, focus more, etc. As our English majors like to say, irregardless, my original post that I created has disappeared, and I have no intention of trying to re-create it. I don’t know why a moderator would have wasted his time on moving or deleting a post I made specifically about Tyrese Samuel. That moderator, if I can find out who he is, will, of course, be hearing from my lawyers (Dewey, Cheatum & Howe).

I would say you’re right about it being mental with Samuel, but look at his stroke. It all looks good until the last second when he just sort of flips it with his wrist. Very inconsistent with that motion. Do you think they would’ve figured that out earlier in the year.

It's not a zero sum game. He missed all those free throws but that means he is getting them in foul trouble. I wouldn't say it didn't hurt us "that bad" though. 14 misses equals 7 possessions. We made up for it with the 2nd half rebounding advantage but it absolutely hurts.

Obviously everyone here loves Samuel many have praised his character and demeanor but his free throw issues hurt. Conversely, he is a major problem for the opponents when he hits free throws as evidenced by his performance against Bama at home.

That’s why I made a reference to hacker a shack. he’s good on dunks and rebounds. But it forced to shoot a jumpshot. He uses that same motion which is extremely unrepeatable and unreliable. Love the kid though. He’s definitely better for our game.

Why not merge instead of deleting the post, which including an analytical perspective on why TS is missing FTs? I, for one, learned something from it.

Please don’t misunderstand my post. I love Samuel. He has brought a post presence that we haven’t had in a while. Just that one thing is a glaring deficiency that I think maybe they should’ve recognized him. Try to fix early in the season. Glad he’s on our team though. Good kid, strong inside player.

I agree, just taking short shots and rebounding he is dam good. I love his attitude, he speaks well and has a positive outlook. We are lucky to have this guy and I for one am all in on Tyrese.

That was in response to another who said it didn't hurt that bad because we scored 85. Just saying, it's a definitely a detriment but that doesn't mean we aren't fans and appreciate his significance. Just a constructive criticism.
