Have to pretty fundamentally disagree with most of this. I'll concede that in Manhattan it sure seems they targeted Trump because they knew with how fast and loose he plays with the rules they'd be able to get him on something.

For the others though, the investigations long pre-dated him officially declaring his candidacy, which he did even earlier than for the 2016 election. He's the one who chose to run for President despite knowing about the investigations and that charges were almost certainly coming.

I also disagree that it would have been better to bring narrow charges for obstruction only. I fail to see how that would do anything other than further the narrative that the DOJ is out to get Trump. The talking points would be that the DOJ couldn't find an actual crime so they charged him with obstruction.

 

Well, he was also part of a plot to try to get alternate electors used for the legally appointed ones, so I'm pretty sure the whole thinking world's opinion that he meant "invent votes out of thin air" is correct. Also, he's a lifelong criminal and scumbag and an adjudicated rapist.

So, not a whole lot of reason to invent innocent intent for Trump...EVER.

Most Americans reject Trump's claim that the election was stolen and illegitimate. I've seen polls which indicate that even a significant number of Republicans feel that way. Of course, many have declared they will support Trump even if he's actually convicted.

 

I agree when you say most, but there is definitely, IMO, 90% or so of those supporting Trump that still feel that the last election was rigged. I have a hard time accepting that it wasn't, but at this point no REAL evidence can prove that, so I do accept it. My point was, the many that support him even if convicted, could have been a smaller number, probably enough to keep him from winning, had the prosecutors in all these cases when for a solid base hit and won, rather than swinging for the fences.

 

To be fair it’s not that those 50% aren’t non thinkers it’s just that their thoughts various degrees of shallow, ill informed, narrowly focused, evil, mendacious and a few other terrible adjectives. The remaining 50% are hardly elite but way better in comparison.

Why is it hard for you to accept? The fact that Trump claimed he won Georgia by hundreds of thousands of votes and then didn't have any evidence is telling. If you read or listen to the call, Trump kept switching the subject each time the discussion turned more specific - such as the purported claim that thousands and thousands of dead people voted. Trump got so flustered that he wound up accusing the Republican officials of being guilty of crimes while reiterating that they needed to find him the votes. There was just nothing credible about any of it.
