Who had a better season, Iowa or UF?

We lost to Arkansas. We would lose to plenty of G5 schools. Of course our record would have been better

 

I agree and I know people are going to freak out at this next fact, but at the end we played 2 top 10 teams very closely.
We should have beaten Mizzou and we were close to FSU before some dumb mistakes.
While I'm no fan of moral victories, its quite a contrast to Iowa's 92-0.

The punchback on this is Arkansas. I agree- it was a disaster. No excuses.
Perhaps I could say we had some potential and were getting better at the end, but CBN still has A LOT of work to do.

 

Im betting arkansas was better than most anyone Iowa beat. I'm sure I'm gonna get accused of claiming moral victories. I'm not. Florida had everything to play for at home and lost mostly due to that horrific defense but arkansas went toe to toe with plenty of good teams including ole miss who some here slobber over because of their coach.

They had 2 bad losses, a blowout against auburn and a hideous 7 to3 loss to miss state but they were competitive in almost every game.

So are you saying if Florida was in the BiG, we would have been 10-4? Or would we have found a way to lose? You're also measuring by points/game. Iowa's total defense was 7th, while Florida's was 69th. Florida's total offense was 46th while Iowa's was last in the nation. Pretty much proves that a top defense with no offense is better than the other way around, and Florida's offense wasn't exactly top 25.

We played four teams with less than four losses, although FSU was a shell of their team with Travis. Even then, they still beat us at home, in large part due to their top 25 defense. They got shutout by the top three teams they faced, lost to Minnesota with a 6-7 record, and had eight wins by ten or fewer points against virtually all mediocre teams.

I suppose they played well enough to win. We got easily beaten by 5-loss Utah, blown out by 6-loss Kentucky, was lucky to beat USCe, and lost to 4-8 Arkansas at home. Iowa was apparently good enough to win.

 

Against P5 teams with more than 5 losses since 2021, Florida is 6-8. We lost four games to P5 teams with losing records. Against all P5 competition, we are 10-21 (.322).

From 2010-2020, we lost zero games to P5 opponents. We DID lose to Georgia Southern, but we were pulling students out of the stands to play.

Gotta love how people cherry pick data to support arguments. Fsu was a shell of their team without Travis but no mention of us without Mertz. Arkansas went toe with ole miss, Missouri, lsu and Bama barely losing all of those games.

Florida had some bad losses. Not defending their performance against Kentucky or Utah especially but delving into the actual schedules of Iowa, Florida and Arkansas is pretty telling. Arkansas wasn't nearly as bad as their record and Iowa wasn't nearly as good as theirs. Their schedule was atrocious and their performance against teams with a pulse was even worse.

All that said, this is a pretty sad debate. At the end of the day no one is arguing Florida's performance was acceptable but the OP asked a question about Iowa and their schedule support his notion that their team was garbage despite their shiny record.

Hopefully one day soon these types of comparisons are moot. I only chimed in at all because of the incessant bashing of Florida at any chance. Plenty of stuff to criticize without fudging arguments.

 

I’ll be happy when only forty or so teams schedule each other. They could do it like golf or soccer where you play your way up to have the opportunity to play in the top division . This years schedule is brutal compared to other schools but should be the norm for any team that wants to play for national championships . Get rid of the ucf and that other garbage game and we have a legit schedule with no free wins to fake it.

 

Strength of schedule matters more than the talking heads in sports really care to admit. That's why thye have far less ranking services like the Harris Poll and the Computer Polls... I know some computer polls are way off the mark, but they did a overall decent job of getting the SOS closer than the humans did... most times.

 

That is why it was important to have a significant number of the computer type polls. Computer polls are only as good as the humans that program them, and that human bias sometimes showed up. Having multiple computer polls from multiple sources and indexing them was helpful in weeding out some, but not all of the bias.

His poll was one that always seemed to have Va Tech a little higher in his poll than some others when the computer polls were being used. It was one of things I first thought of when I mentioned the human bias portion of the computer program.

 

But if you open the link, you'll find pretty much ALL the polls on there, along with a composite average. In unity lies strength.
