Cam Newton wore number 2. Didn't he win the Heisman?

This could be the start of something big - if we don't shoot ourselves in the head with misplaced angst, bruised feelings and general frustration with the course of events. Obviously, there is legitimate cause for concern re the direction of the program. Any reasonable take demands that admission. But just as obviously, there are those who actually think it's a good idea to throw crap at this new roster and the reconstituted staff that assembled them - before ever seeing what they can actually do. I'm currently taking the input coming from some corners with a huge dose of skepticism - based on the sheer inappropriateness of their claptrap. And FTR, cautious optimism is not a thought crime. GG!

What is so great about that number? I would rather have 11 or 55. At least those two guys left something to live up to. The last two number 1's on Defense didn't leave much of a legacy.

He's got a lot more confidence than I do. I haven't seen much on the field that has made me take notice, and he is chronically injured.

Good arm. He has an odd little hitch in his windup, although to go along with a very compact throwing motion.

I’ve never understood it myself, wouldn’t you want to keep the number everyone already knows you as, doesn’t that make you more recognizable?

An interesting offseason discussion would be to see what numbers people thought were sacred. Probably would reflect on what generation you are from.

Well I think that 11 is multi-generational. 15 and 7 gotta be up there too!

The no 1 is usually given to someone considered to be perhaps the top player on the team. Of course, they don't always live up to it, but giving that number to someone who played on last year's defense would suggest poor play is accepted in the program.

Welker had a talent for finding a crease in a defense and Brady got him the ball on cue..
