‘My gripe is with the system’: Why some fans are resisting giving money to NIL collectives

“At the end of the day, NIL is probably the most direct line to being competitively relevant,” one administrator at a power conference program said. “The old adage in fundraising is to say: ‘Coach what do you need, how can I help you?’ It used to be, ‘I need a new locker room’ or something like that. Now, 90 percent, if not 100 percent, of coaches are going to say, ‘I need NIL money.’”

I'm not sure if I have a bigger problem with the NIL... or the people in the media constantly bellyaching about it. It's here. It's not going away. And I have gotten over it.

The natural order of things is for big donors to stop giving big money... and then we get the correction that naturally happens with inflated products.

The problem is the top teams are bringing in 1,2,3 hundred million a year off of footbal and the players are the commodity involved. You have pretty little orange and blue uniforms and a stadium, but without the talent, you have nothing. It’s not right that the fans should pay the players when we already gave them those profits to begin with.

Funny how that works. It's as if the athletes actually benefited from over 100 years of infrastructure, tradition, branding, alumni, fan loyalty, marketing, exposure and all the other things that came along with it like coaching, nutrition, gear, tuition, education, housing etc instead if solely being taken advantage of.

100%. I was listening to an interview (sirius XM college sports) and they said that at the end of the day, after you ignore all the stuff around NIL, Portal, expanded playoffs, conference re-alignment etc, the one with all the power is the one that owns the Logo.

Now, that doesn't mean that those that own the logo don't want to have great players and have exciting games on campus but that's why there are still fans at Arizona State (no offense to ASU fans).

Yep. When I went to an NFL game I knew my money went to the team and they spent a portion of that to get players. Now in college football you want me to pay for that ticket, a wealthy institution staffed by wealthy individuals pockets the money and then asks me to help pay the players that I pay to see. That’s a broken system.

The problem is the gripe was CFB brought in millions with extremely highly paid staff and admin, fancy training facilities, and updated stadiums….all of this directly due to fans and donors.

The players got “nothing” and that was unfair. I get it

But instead of spreading the wealth they decided to just ask the fans for more money to fund this new thing. It’s insane and will be a case study someday.

It’s a two way street. Either side that discounts the other is foolish. How’s the scabs go over when nfl went on strike?

There’s an entire planet full of successful leagues to model after, pick one. They aren’t inventing the wheel.

Instead of jerseys with the last names on them, it should just be the dollar sign, $. The more money the kid gets the more dollar signs, $$$. That way we know who’s bought and paid for, and who will probably be gone next year to a higher bidder. Either way, my wallet is closed.

I love being right. Now the question will be whether the playoff TV money will be enough to offset the inevitable flight of booster money.

The only solution that will somewhat fix this mess is one pot of $$$, that is completely controlled and distributed by the school, imho. It will first and foremost do away with these shady third party “collectives”, who are nothing but another level of redistribution. Stop the ruse that the players are actually doing anything other than playing football for the $$$. Let the schools allocate the $$$ how they see fit. If you want to contribute $10,000+ to be a Bull Gator every year, great. If you want to give $10 a month to pitch in, that’s also great. If you don’t want to kick in when the hat comes around, or can’t, no problem, that should be everyone’s prerogative.

Your solution doesn't stop a 3rd party from signing a player to an NIL deal. Until they are employees signing contracts that state the player cannot be employed by anyone else.

Is there one that denies college players from making money off of their Name, Image and likeness?
