SF voters approve Mayor London Breed’s drug and crime measures - POLITICO

SAN FRANCISCO — Mayor London Breed has convinced voters to approve a pair of ballot measures that will move the city strikingly rightward by requiring drug screening for welfare recipients and easing restrictions on police officers.

Breed, who faces a tough reelection fight this November, banked her political future on a hard pivot toward more conservative policies aimed at appealing to residents’ frustrations about the city’s fentanyl addiction crisis and concerns about crime. Her bet appears to have yielded results — voters were on track Tuesday to approve at least two of the three measures she sponsored.

Opponents, including progressive members of the Board of Supervisors, blasted the measure as too far-right for San Francisco. They called it inhumane and said it would force more impoverished people with addiction problems out of public housing.

Voters also appeared to approve an additional Breed-sponsored proposal, Proposition E, which eases restrictions on the police department, including allowing officers to engage in more vehicle chases and use public surveillance cameras and drones to combat crime.

This a step in the right direction. I think the entire country should follow

I also think anyone receiving an income tax deduction should be drug screened - standard deduction or not. You get a government benefit you should be clean. Seems fair.

interesting passive false comparison. ‘Allowing’ someone to keep more of what they rightfully earned vs handout without having earned it initially. Both having to pass a government litmus test. Yeah. those are soooo similar.

You owe your share of $31T and the funding of it through taxes. You didn’t earn a break, it was given to you. Don’t use anything the $31T paid for and I will have no argument.

Impracticable. The cost to test every tax payer for drugs is insane, and would be a huge waste of time and $ the gov doesnt have.

What break was he “given” that wasn’t earned? Honest question, I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make.

Florida tried the whole "drug screening for welfare recipients" thing under Rick Scott back in 2012. The state lost money on the program because the overwhelming majority of welfare recipients do not, in fact, do drugs.

Also, IIRC, Scott's wife had an ownership stake in the company that was awarded the state contract to perform the drug screenings.
