It's not control if it's voluntary.

Me neither, since none of the ivys have athletic scholarships I'm guessing they give players "academic" scholarships so they aren't paying the full tuition and board of other students. If that's the case, then the players are getting something but it doesn't sound like the program is financially healthy enough to survive this.

Dartmouth has a 7.9 billion dollar endowment. They can find the money to keep their programs running.

Most people who aren't living beyond their means live to them. We don't really have a country full of savers. This most likely includes colleges and universities. An endowment is called an endowment, because the principal cannot be used to fund routine expenses, only the earnings on that principal. I'm sure that Dartmouth could "afford" it if they wanted to but if you believe their financial data that they are losing money on sponsoring the program and would most likely have to divert endowment earnings being used to fund some other activity, why would they want to? I'll bet Dartmouth would get along wonderfully without a basketball program.

Yep, why continue to fund a money losing, poor performing program, that now wants more money. I'll be happy to see the first NCAA team to unionize be left without a team to play for.

I'm hoping it won't come to that and this misguided administrator will be over-ruled, but I don't doubt that there could be any kind of monkey business coming out of the very capital of monkey business: Washington, D.C.

Kids pay from a young age. If it’s a not for profit sport, somebody has to pay so they can play a game. Anyone want to pay for me to go fishing.

Title 9 gets all those unprofitable sports to exist.

I am also collecting money for fishing. I am better at it than Dartmouth is at basketball, so you can feel good about your donati...cough...investment.

Their entire athletic budget for all sports is 35 million. The basketball budget is 1.3 million. According to the 2023 report they broke even on basketball.
