I don't know the numbers, but didn't Trump replace NAFTA with USMCA back in 2020?

President Donald J. Trump’s United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Delivers a Historic Win for American Workers – The White House

DELIVERING ON HIS PROMISE: President Donald J. Trump is replacing the outdated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

    • Today, President Trump is signing his historic USMCA deal, making good on his promise to deliver fairer and more reciprocal trade for the American people.
    • USMCA will replace the terrible NAFTA agreement that resulted in the loss of millions of American jobs and devastated communities across our country.
    • The deal marks a tremendous victory for American workers, farmers, manufacturers, and businesses alike.

Mexico's GDP, by year, since 1987. They have really benefitted from the trade agreements and we have seen a significant reduction in Mexican undocumented immigrants because of it. We have also seen many Mexican national return back home over the years.

Not sure what we can do with the Northern Triangle countries. They need to get their act together politically before anything will significantly change. Mexico finally did around 2000 when they finally voted out a PRI party candidate, which changed some of the corruption in the country. But all significant change must come internally, and we can't force a change on other countries. It just doesn't work.

Meanwhile, we have our own labor issues. We should hand out work permits to the immigrants coming in and allow them to work. And if after their asylum hearing is denied, if they are working and still want to stay, extend a guest worker visa. Sort of, you know, a Gang of 8 style plan!

There is no appetite among our political class to seriously go after drugs. There is not enough faith in government among our electorate to EVER trust them with our safety and give up guns.

Your statistics sound good to an economist but you and I both know that they are only numbers and don’t even begin to address the reality of why people want out.

Peel your numbers back a few layers and they are not as impressive as one might think.

We spend billions "seriously" going after drugs. The harder we push, the more the black market adjusts. Much like with alcohol, you can't command-and-control your way out of drug markets. We also don't need to give up guns. The real issue is that gun owners won't accept a lack of convenience needed to slow down smuggling, such as being able to produce the guns you own to demonstrate that you aren't serving as the first step on the route of a legal gun from a store in the US to a cartel in Mexico or a gang in Central America or the Caribbean.

They are not only numbers. They are numbers utilized to describe activity. Again, people aren't pushing out of Mexico in the way they once were. Look at the country-of-origin of migrants by year.

Peel them back in what way?

I disagree that we seriously go after drugs. We seriously go after low level losers and interdict large shipments. Never going to work.

Peel them back by cost category and by real $. Just inflate the 30 year old figure by the annual rates for the last 30 years. That’s going take a huge chunk of that growth.

Using common dollar figures: $87.72 billion in 1993 (utilizing 2023 dollars) to $323 Billion now. Utilizing constant dollars, exports to Mexico have increased by 368%. That is quite a bit.
