So, while looking up some numbers to respond to a post, I came across the incredible case of Iowa football in 2023 and I asked myself. Did this 24th ranked team actually have a better season than UF?

At a glance, it's a no brainer. Iowa 10-4 vs 5-7 UF, why would anyone even think these 2 teams in the strongest 2 conferences in CFB are remotely close? Well lets start with point differential:

UF points for 28.4 vs 27.6 against. +0.8 :star:
Iowa points for 15.4 vs 14.8 against. +0.6

    Both teams played Tennessee:

    UF 29-16 UT. :star:
    Iowa 0-35 UT.

    Vs ranked teams:
    UF 1-4, .200 :star:
    Iowa 0-3, .000

Combined score vs ranked teams, this is the nail in the coffin:
    Opponents 168-130 UF :star:
    Opponents 92-0 Iowa

That's not a typo, Iowa was outscored 92 to zero/ziltch/nada vs ranked opponents.

Excellent point. They should fire their offensive coordinator. ;)

Yes. 10-4 (is that correct?) beats 5-7, all day, hands down, in public perception, media perception, and player perception.

Well, they won more than we did, so that's a few less crappy Saturdays. They looked terrible doing it, but better than losing.

Hand on heart, I would take UF's version of 5-7 over Iowa's version of 10-4. I can't imagine how brutal every game was to watch.

Iowa had the better season, but Florida is the better team.

I don't think you guys are putting this in the right perspective. Step back a moment and imagine UF had the same 92-0 result against the 3 highest ranked teams we played. Mizzou, UGA and FSU beats us by a combined 92-0.... I can't imagine a worse hell.

Sec is a bitch. Being ranked doesn’t mean being one of the 25 best teams in the country much of the time. Notre Dame probably hasn’t been a top four teams in quite some time yet they get ranked there.

Perception has always been reality in college football. It's always been dumb. The disparity in schedule has often been overlooked. Maybe none worse than in 1984 when byu won a title without playing a ranked team and squeaking out a win in the holiday bowl against Michigan.

Agree we were better but Iowa had the "better season" despite still sucking.

We had more talent but they had a better coaching staff. Iowa consistently outperforms their talent. If Ferentz would ditch his kid they’d be a solid squad

We would not be happy with Iowa’s results given our expectations.

We weren't happy with our results. The question was whether you'd take their season over ours. In the short term, I think they had a more satisfying season. The only rival they didn't beat was Minnesota and they would have won that game if not for a silly fair catch ruling. Long term, of course no one would rather be Iowa over Florida.

Brian Ferentz is gone. He got canned by the AD. They had him report to her instead of his dad.

The problem is they made a lackluster OC hire but, hey, it can't be worse than last year, right?

Well, we only won ugly during 2012. The rest of the Muschamp era was just ugly without the winning (except for Tennessee).

This would lead one to believe Iowa beat the teams they were supposed to. Achieving this alone would quit the natives greatly.

I realize this is the off-season (c'mon spring ball!!!) and so we have to "entertain ourselves", but to me, there is THE most salient point: Arkansas. Iowa did NOT have that on its resume, given all the energies associated with what was happening in the program and the "black-out" and all. Win that game and all this vitriol comes to an effective end. We did not. And now we are in this malaise.
