not a problem according to some here.
    https://www.axios.com/2024/03/02/data-biden-border-crisis-immigration-8-million-detention
    • The data show that while the backlog has exploded as President Biden has struggled to deal with the unprecedented crush of migrants from around the world, millions already were in the U.S. during the Trump administration.
By the numbers: At the end of fiscal 2023 last Sept. 30, more than 6 million people were on what officials call the "non-detained docket."

    • The government projects that will grow to 8 million by Oct. 1, according to Homeland Security documents sent to Congress.
    • This includes people who have been ordered to be deported, or who don't have final decisions from U.S. officials on their asylum or other immigration cases — but who aren't being held in the limited detention space that's available.
    • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has about 40,000 detention beds.
An estimated 2 million of the migrants in the backlog likely will be high-priority cases — mostly those who have orders to be deported to their home countries, and some with criminal records or pending criminal charges, according to the documents.

Why didn't Trump fix the asylum system when he was POTUS and his party controlled BOTH houses of Congress for two years?! Or at least hire a whole lot more judges to adjudicate asylum?

It's like he was just sitting on his ___ or golfing the whole time. Or stealing.

Now, when Biden gives us such a scorching hot economy that everyone knows if they come here they'll find employment opportunities, it creates this huge backlog.

I'd thought at the time that this was Trump's signature issue. Why didn't he fix it!?

The bill that the Rs just killed had $100 million appropriated for more judges. Would've helped with the backlog? But the Orange God killed it.

He also cut aid to the C. American Triangle countries in 2019. And now, the countries rank 1st, 2nd, and 4th (Mexico third) when it comes to new arrivals into the US. Trump also granted 18 month extended stay to those from Venezuela, which I believe ranks 5th.

Trump and maga killed the border bill that would have helped.

Murphy says GOP voted against border bill to keep border ‘chaotic,’ help Trump campaign

"A “border deal that actually reduced the flow of illegal immigration, that would be good for [President Biden] politically. That is Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), giving away the GOP’s cynical game on fixing the border. Cramer said this without a hint of shame in explaining his opposition to immigration reform."

Trump’s cynical sabotage of immigration reform | The Hill

    WSJ:
By any honest reckoning, this is the most restrictive migrant legislation in decades. Previous immigration talks have involved trading security measures for legalizing more immigration. There is little of the latter in this bill—nothing for nearly all of the Dreamers who were brought here illegally as children, no general pathway to citizenship or green cards for most illegal immigrants already in the U.S. “

Or Biden could reinstate Stay in Mexico if we really wanted to stop this. But most people including both sides don't want this issue to stop.

And if Biden reinstated Stay in Mexico, the ACLU, other international rights groups, and Mexico would sue immediately. And under what authority does the US have the right to tell another nation we are going to keep immigrants who want to come into the US and force them to stay there?

The original authority came during the global pandemic. The pandemic is over. There are still areas where COVID is an epidemic, but it's no longer a global pandemic. Just because one area may have a large outbreak that cause hospitals to require everyone to wear a mask doesn't make COVID a global pandemic again.

For your assistance, I've linked the Dictionary.com definitions of pandemic, which means an illness over an entire country, continent, or world, and epidemic, which means many persons at the same time, but not at the level of a pandemic.

I'm generally on your side on this issue but the bolded part makes no sense to me. We have no obligation to let them in our country just because they want to. If Mexico doesn't want them to be there they'd need to deal with that. That's the whole point of having countries and borders.

It's not so easy for Mexico to take in these migrants. There aren't enough services at the US border to handle an extra tens of thousands of immigrants at the border. During the pandemic, remain in Mexico was an humanitarian nightmare. Imagine what it would be with 4X the number of migrants waiting?

And it's not like Mexico can simply transport these migrants to their southern border. Mexico is between 1,500 and 2,000 miles long from N to S. One way or another, we'd be forcing Mexico into something they don't want, which is create a situation ripe for criminal activity on their side of the border. Or, make Mexico spend millions on moving these migrants out of Mexico. Again, what authority do we have to tell Mexico this is what we're doing to you, and you are just going to have to bend over and take it?

During the pandemic, we could at least use that to say we want to keep COVID out. But again, COVID is no longer a pandemic, but an epidemic. Epidemics generally don't come with the same, national XO power that a pandemic has.

Then there's the potential problems. What if the immigrants get tired of waiting and block the ports of entry from Mexico into the US? That's hundreds of millions of dollars of products that would be stuck in Mexico, causing shortages and inflation. What if the migrants got tired and they all decide to cross at the same time? Could we handle this? Again, during the pandemic, the numbers weren't that manageable. With 4X the number, that's 4X the pressure at the border.

OP why do you think Republicans keep blocking funding for more asylum judges?

It wouldn’t help the backlog at this moment, but going forward would stop it in its tracks. Not a hard thing to understand.

No offense, cause again, you and I are pretty much along the same lines on immigration. But you just described a bunch of Mexico problems, not US problems. It's not our obligation to make their problems our problems just because people are coming through their country to get to ours. If Mexico doesn't want a bunch of migrants piling up in their country they can secure their own borders.

Simple. Reinstate stay in Mexico and call it a national security issue or piggyback off hospitals still requiring masks and colleges requiring the Covid vaccine. Not complicated.

You mean...the Bill that would allow @2 million to walk across our borders illegally each year ahead of others waiting their turn?
The same Bill where the robust, highly active and mentally fit Joe Biden could even have extended those numbers if so desired?

Because when migrants realize they can’t just stay in the US while waiting for up to 5 years in Mexico they will stop trying to come to the US.

Where did I say we should allow everyone to come? Never did. What I do say is everyone who can pass a background check and can remain gainfully employed should be allowed to stay. Call it an extended guest worker program like the Gang of 8 recommended.

And with currently 3 million more open positions than unemployed, we have a demand for labor. We should have a plan to address our labor shortage needs. If it's not immigrants, anyone else have ideas?

And remain in Mexico? Mexico can close their side of the border and cause us problems. Again, hundreds if millions of goods come in daily. And so do Mexicans coming to shop. Tucson rakes in about $1 billion from Mexican visitors annually. Shut this off, and it hurts us economically.

And really think immigrants will really see a US Closed sign and simply turn around and go home? Again, thanks for another great laugh!

You are hilarious. Constant laughs. I mean it must be hard to literally be on the wrong side of almost every hot button topic for the past 4 years. You are on a hell of a hot streak of being wrong. But keep it up, law of averages should get you a win soon. I’m pulling for you sport!
