No looks like he read the Old Testament and quoted it pretty accurately.

 

The Bible was certainly used to defend slavery in the US in the 1800s. And I guess segregation 100 years later.
Emancipation and integration too, for that matter.

 

It’s an amorphous collection of stories that you can use to justify almost any action.

I always thought the heart of what it means to be a true Christian would be to love one another. Which seems incompatible with slavery.

If I was going to work slavery into a sermon, I would be talking about how Christ frees us from the slavery of death and the slavery of sin.

 

John MacArthur was once one of the great theologians of our day as for as scriptural study goes but I fear he has slipped mentally. This seems quite distant from his early self. I am deeply sad to see this type of rhetoric from him.

Teaching against homosexuality is not abnormal withing the faith as it is clearly discussed in scripture. (Albeit interpreted differently by different folks), but this take on race and slavery (if that was the point) is just terrible and I hope he didn't mean it like it is being represented, but if he did he should step down and begin his retirement.

So no @WarDamnGator I will not call him a non Christian. Decades have proven otherwise. He has welcomed pastors of all races into his pulpit and traveled the world with them....But that is no excuse for this sermon and this sermon tells me he should at the very least throw himself at the feet of those hurt by his comments and practice the servanthood he preached here.

I will have to dive deeper into the context of Dr MacArthur's sermon, but at face value its a terrible take. Unacceptable from a man of God.

His comments were in a Q&A after doing research and are not that controversial from a biblical standpoint and the fruit we show.



MacArthur has shown no reason to need to retire and is one of the great Bible Teachers/Theologians of our time.

I said IF. I however have had my issues with John over the years. He can be a little legalistic and I find Calvinism to be anti-gospel.

I value his Biblical exegesis, but am not always in agreement with where that lands him.
At the very least his statement is wrong. Jesus came to free slaves. Period. Full stop. That SHOULD always be the answer when discussing Jesus and slavery because it was Jesus' own answer.

Just making sure. If you read the OP and click the link…it says he said this in a “sermon”. I am just saying this is a pure hit post by a poster who almost surly is a non believer.

 

I find the entire notion of organized religion baffling. I personally feel closer to God on a mountain or in the ocean. I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there.

 

I disagree with MacArthur on baptism where you likely agree with him. I side with Sproul on that issue. But as you noted. MacArthur is one one of the great Bible scholars. He did nothing to change that and this is a pure hit piece by the OP. He is still rocking it for our Lord and Savior!

And try to tell others how right you are in your beliefs. Write them into law and have the highest court in the land reverse the law when it isn't what you want. Even in cases where the vast majority of a democratic republic strongly disagree.
