Typing as I listen,.. and driving! So this is shorthand summary… Tale of two halves… played really well in first half.., got stops, rebounded well and didn’t turn the ball over. Second half big issue was free throw line.We -apparently need to teach verticality and how to defend without fouling. They went to line 22 times versus our 10. Gotta attack zone better. And then turnovers In the first half we did a good job banging in shots and rebounding. Second half we had 8 turnovers, and that’s giving away too many possessions. We were tentative …we drew up some things to attack the middle zone. It’s been a of an Achilles heel for us, and gotta get better at it. We put some shooters out there and tried to get into the middle, but we were tentative.
Thanks for posting. I’m gonna try and YouTube his post game presser when it’s available. But according to what you posted I think he hit the nail directly on the head on several points. TG is a good coach and a smart guy. I’m willing to bet he gets his thing figured out.
it’s really late in the season, and I think we will probably struggle against the zone for the rest of this year… however long that turns out to be. But, this is the learning curve Todd Golden. I suspect this off-season will include learning a zone… And practicing and playing against that zone.
Great post, but dang dude how do you type? Listen and drive at the same time. Sounds extraordinarily dangerous. Be safe out there!
Im sure he is teaching his guys how to break it down but they arent doing it. That is his task, to figure out a way his team will do what he asks in a way that is easy for them to grasp.
Yeah- i agree. this isn’t advanced math. He KNOWS how to attack zone. But knowing how to do something, actually doing it… Are, of course, two different things. Which is why teams that employ a zone, are also usually pretty effective at beating one. They are able to practice against it. We don’t have such luxury.
Being tentative caused several turnovers, guys passing up open looks to get a better look or just not wanting to take shots. Richards needs to find his shot again. We should be a tough team to zone with the number of guys we have that can shoot from 3.
Clayton had a strange game leading us in scoring with 20 points, including 6 3's, but only shot once inside the arc and committed 6 turnovers, many live ball. Haugh played a terrific first half, but after he put up a brick from 3, we hardly saw him after halftime.
It would seem to me that if you see a I-3-1 defense the easiest way to beat it is to put all four players down in the block and let the point guard or two guard create their own shot from the oerimeter.
I’ve wondered why he doesn’t employ one himself. Hoping this isn’t a hard lesson to learn this year why he should.
I had a friend killed on his bike by a girl texting and "driving". Well, she was behind the wheel. It is a huge sore spot for me.
I am very sorry to hear. I assure you, I was not truly “texting and driving”. I did wait til at traffic lights… which is why the disclaimer of it being a shorthand summary. I was trying to remember what was said.
Yeah, Clayton's shooting was a big plus, but his turnovers were a killer. And, his TOs seemed very unnecessary (and easily correctable). Even so, we were in good position to knock off a top team at their home. I have to credit USC with knocking down a lot of big shots over the last 5 to 10 minutes of the game. I haven't watched them enough to know if they are consistently that good at shot-making; I was somewhat under the impression that they weren't. I like our chances against them on a neutral court.
All of these recent losses to Quad 1 teams, I firmly believe we are better than them on a neutral court, or neutrally officiated game. These teams are bullying their way to victories, with the help of the refs on their home court. I do wish the team could stop being tentative. Can’t have 2 starters with zero points.
