South Carolina plays it and the refs let them do whatever they wanted in the second half. They were in the double bonus before they even committed their 4th foul against us. Classic example of referees being swayed by a loud home crowd. They were afraid to call fouls against South Carolina because they got booed for every little thing. It should be a technical foul for intentionally kicking the ball which that kid did at least 3 times I counted at the top of the zone. Kicking at a ball isn’t a basketball play. And oh yeah, Clayton got fouled on the 3 point shot at the end of the game. But..shocker they didn’t call it. Because South Carolina doesn’t foul.
I'm hopefully optimistic that we did today. If it was obvious to me (and the rest of us watching) it should be obvious to TG and the team. I hate losing, but more than any other game this season, I think this one was the most valuable... considering we likely aren't fighting for a tournament berth.
I agree we have to do better vs zones, we will see it a bunch. However, to say the refs one sided officiating doesn't affect a team in a hostile environment is nuts. Usce was in the bonus plus with less than 10 minutes played or there about's. Getting to the foul line again and again and you start playing off your man let alone now that crowd is back into it. Frustration imo has to mount as if the fix is in.
It was poorly officiated, but if you play “tentative”… and word Golden used… against a zone, you are less likely to force the opposition into fouls. Yeah- refs blew some calls. But the team can only control what it can control. Gotta fix the zone execution.
Officials tend to let teams who play bully def get away with more fouls …? They play almost the same as they did with Martin… Tenn gets away with bully D and AM does also … all 3 get away with more contact than other teams do
Agreed on the zone offense , but I feel like the officiating is playing too big a role in game outcomes Not asking for more calls to go UFs way - asking for fewer calls altogether- I like our chances against anyone in a “let them play “ type of game Wish the officials were incentivized to limit calls as much as possible to more meaningful contact - forcefully contacting a shooter , bodying a balllhandler and causing a turnover, that type of thing. Not the guy standing still with his hands straight up foul we see too often, minor body contact in the open floor resulting in nothing, etc…. I know - significant/meaningful contact is still very subjective, but again maybe officials could be encouraged to default to the no call when in doubt - keep games moving, make the bonus and particularly the double bonus situations an occasional thing, not an every game multiple minutes thing ( it seems to me it wasn’t always this way )
it's the old strategy that seems to work - play "aggressive" D, be known for playing "aggressive" D, and surely they can't call us on EVERY play. Eventually your team is just known for being "tough" on defense, and you can get away with bloody murder. Meanwhile on the other end, you can also be "aggressive" on offense, because that's just your "style of play". See: Bama, SCAR, etc. Refs just seem to let them get away with it because that's their reputation and style, but that style is based on borderline thug behavior and often fouls on every possession. The refs can't call them all so choose to call next to none.
It’s compounded even more when they call ticky tack fouls on the one team while letting the other team play physical.
This. We have multiple games now where our players have been called for fouls when they didn't even make contact while opponents have mugged Gator players on the defensive end without a call. In the Bama game even their guard got away with bullying on his offensive drives. Adapt and overcome should always be the mindset but at some point the disparity in how a game is called takes its toll.
that crap really ticks me off. I might break my TV the next time an announcer says the word "physicality." And Jimmy Dykes is such a tool. He repeatedly says/said the bama guard "gets his forearm and shoulder into the defenders chest and muscles his way into the paint." Yeah, that's called FOUL jackass! Look it up!

Same thing against Mixzzou with Nick Honor. I recall his driving hard to the backet, with 3 bumps into the the defender's chest (Haugh, I believe) for an easy basket. Next time down, Haugh presented more restistance and got called for the foul. These "downhill" guards get away with murder. Way back in the day, basketball was considered to be a noncontact sport, any contact drew the whistle. This was in the 40s or 50s mind you, but that's how it used to be
Gotta watch out for another punk bully ball team and coach tomorrow. I hope our guys offensively power right through it and the refs don’t allow it to become a hockey game contact wise.
