Sad and embarrassing day for the State of Florida. Hopefully once the hated-filled DeSantis regime is removed, sensibility will return.
Prediction: Getting rid of window dressing diversity efforts wont make conservatives happy about colleges
What about all those years you did and had no idea what DEI even was because no one told you to be mad about it
To think: we have reached peak society where everything is perfect! Diversity of ideas and thought permeate in our discourse. Woman and minorities have equity in opportunity and compensation — don’t need that “leg up” over their white male counterparts. Bi-pedal, mono-pedal and amelia mammalians have all been included in all aspects of society. Rejoice humans, rejoice!
Dang. I was just about to apply for an executive position in a field I had no experience in. Pretty sure I’d have gotten the job before they got rid of DEI.
Screw Ron Desantis and his entire cabinet, including his shitty ass surgeon general currently letting measles run rampant in the state. Can’t wait until this bozo is out of office.
I go back and forth on this. I agree that it's window dressing so not sure what purpose it's serving other than giving those people something to point at to say GO TEAM! Kind of like naming a public building after a civil rights leader then we can say "So we named this after so and so which means we're all good now right?" Doesn't really change anything at the end of the day. May make some feel better about themselves but that's about it.
I think the look on this is bad, especially with all the other things that have happened at UF in the last year. But put one or two of them in marketing where they can make sure there’s diverse marketing plans . One or two in admissions, one or two in outreach, one or two senior admin roles, a few into faculty roles that lack diversity, and you’re gonna be doing the same exact thing, but in a much smarter more targeted way. I won’t go so far as to say DEI has run its course because the idea is important, but at some point they are pushing farther and farther out on the envelope to justify their roles (especially when a place like UF had 13 people doing it), and that’s become devisive. UF literally announced they had counseling available for anyone who was triggered by Halloween a few years ago. University of Florida offers counseling for students offended by Halloween costumes The pendulum swung too far left, and it’s swinging back hard right. An equilibrium will be found eventually.
From a Google search: Educational composition of 2022 votersBy contrast, a majority of Republican voters in 2022 had no college degree (63%); a smaller share had a college degree or more (37%). This is similar to the shares of Republican voters with and without a college degree in 2018.Jul 12, 2023. Democrats in 2022 by contrast had 51% with a college degree. Suggesting, the GOP's attack on books and history and diversity may be largely about maintaining power in our government and less about government for the people.
I do too, I sort of resent that I have to defend DEI, given that it is basically corporate window dressing that has seeped into the academic world. If I believed they were going to use the money to hire more people to actually teach or add tenure track positions, and fund underserved departhments it would bother me less. But we all know they arent, and the quality of teaching at UF wont improve, and the effort to gut everything that isnt basically a conservative approved trade or grant draw will continue apace. The business mentality of making people do more with less wont change as long as people who think public education is bad are in charge.
