Lol... and you're not a "BABE," so what does that have to do with legacy kids being denied entry to The University of Florida with the proper grades and credits/SAT? Did you learn how to stay on subject in college?
Again, you’re the one that is struggling mightily. UF can’t just magically admit more students than they have room for, period. If you were remotely familiar with the entire campus, not just the stadium, you would know that. In addition, what are the “proper” grades and test scores? Just admit that you don’t understand the process. Also, please work on your reading comprehension. I was responding to the poster that was looking at out of state schools for his own children.
I am not struggling, it's you that cannot stay on the subject matter. So tell us swamp "Babe," why can't high school students that qualify academically not at least gain admittance (at the very least) online... if they have the grades. Why is the whole entrance procedure be one big hidden black whole of darkness? Why is there no transparency in the system? I don't expect you or anyone here to have the answers to that question, but at least some here know how to debate without trying so damned hard to personally disqualify/insult someone else from this debate. You need to let it go, if you cannot add to this debate then feel free to just let it go. But just because you cannot add anything worthy to this discussion doesn't mean you can simply insult other posters... because of your inability to debate this subject. If you cannot debate a subject you just might resort to personal insults? Is that some sort of a defensive maneuver? I can see you're not worthy of my time, Swampbabe... But if you never played football please don't expect any respect on that subject matter, becasue I am damn sure you never applied to partake in that sport... going by your standards. Time out for you... from me.
@swampbabe Cheer up, at least he didn't call you a "communist." By the way, Rick, one "becasue" might be an oversight, two "becasues" might be a simple mistake, but three "becasues" pretty much highlights why UF isn't for everyone.
Do you think there should be more transparency in the admissions to The University of Florida? Do you think qualified people/applicants should be allowed to enroll for online classes? I usually typo more than I should, and go back an fix them afterwards... sometimes I forget.
When I saw your post I said there is no way. Not Bama , so you caused me to do research and I’ll be damned you were correct. Hats off ! And more women!! What’s it coming to Babe ???
In a meritocracy, who cares about “legacy” kids? That should never be a thing anyway, particularly at a public institution (for practical reasons, might be more the norm at private schools, but that hardly makes it right). The idea any of it should be connected to football donations is completely laughable. At its worst it’s reverse affirmative action. Interesting seeing some of the folks so against DEI are ok with daddy effectively bribing the sons and daughters way into schools, or not even bribing the actual school, but [checks notes]… the football program??? I do think UF should have some sort of standard for “automatic” admissions. But numbers wise I have no idea what that could be. Some states automatically admit the top 10% of high school students (regardless of high school), but in a state as large as FL even that might be too much to practically guarantee UF admissions, so perhaps it would have to be top 5%. I think that would be a decent mechanism for filling maybe half an incoming class because it would not punish students who go poor or inner city schools. And yes, of course that is not entirely fair someone just outside top 10% who go to a more rigorous school, that’s where some subjectivity in admissions must also come into play to get those students in too, there is no perfectly fair system. It’s also not exactly “injustice” for some to have to go to UCF or USF…
Mixed. It’s a sign of how great the university has become. At the same time, I like the idea of the opportunity of the best state school being realistically obtainable for at least all intellectually average in-state students (provided they work extremely hard and do everything in their power to gain the necessary credentials). I’m not sure that’s the case, or it’s been the case for some years now. Credentials now give you a chance. You need a good sales job and a compelling application to close the deal, both of which are highly out of the control of applicants.
One thing I believe they do is they try to take a few students from every Florida high school. They’ll take the best from each school. But that means some people at competitive high schools can be left out.
To be fair, I’m not sure anyone is saying that. People just want it to be another significant point in their favor. As of today, maybe unless your dad/mom has his/her name plastered on one of the buildings, the fact that a parent went to UF plays zero role in whether you are admitted. It does not matter at all. Most of the time a legacy is admitted to Harvard (because they’re a legacy), it’s not like they’re a poor or even average student. They just likely wouldn’t have gotten in otherwise.
UF is actually fairly transparent on what they prioritize. I’ve mentioned it in previous posts. People must choose to not follow it. As far burning in more kids, I was on campus for the first time in years last spring and I was shocked. It’s bursting at the seams already. You could add kids in the summer when there’s space but then falls rolls around and you’re beyond full. To bring in another few K would mean hiring professors, building dorms, building new class space, and you would have to go out past frat row. I think we’re just about at our limit. To your point about online, the demand for that hasn’t been great. But even with that, you need professors for those additional kids. Just not practical for us right now. honestly our best bet might be a true satellite campuses, which is why we’re working on them in Jax, Palm Beach and other places.
Never doubt me, Wing. I check my facts before I post. Fun fact, my oldest went to Bama her first semester because they gave her a big ass scholarship. We were living in VA at the time. After two weeks she called admissions at UF, where she had also been accepted, and asked if she could come to UF in January. They said yes and the rest is history. BTW, they wouldn’t take some of her credits from Bama because they weren’t “rigorous” enough.
This is quite accurate and relevant to the repeated point that legacy students should have an higher acceptance value because their parents will more likely donate.
