They aren’t clown colleges! They are every bit of state school as any other.

They can. The issue is that, as demand for UF rises, what constitutes “good enough grades/SAT scores to get into the University of Florida” increases and people aren’t happy that what would have gotten you in 20 years ago is no longer “good enough grades/SAT scores” anymore.

Florida is a rapidly growing state and UF can’t just magically double in size. The result is that there are plenty of smart kids who won’t get into UF, even if they might have in the past.

Should the university consider adding some buildings and faculty? Or do you think they should hold steady (student body size) where they are right now?

The legacy kids trying to get into UF right now have parents who went to UF in the 90s. The state population is about 60% higher than it was back then. UF can't admit every legacy applicant. Demanding they do so is unrealistic.

Haha, the subject at hand is that you have no clue about what you’re talking about.

If you’ve not attended UF (you haven’t or you would have said so) then you really don’t understand admissions, space, and everything else that goes into these decisions.

I think we’re also discussing how UF has slowly changed due to its ability to attract elite students. This has caused many older generation gators to lose a connectedness and interest as the campus looks more and more different than it did even 20 years ago.
I am sad to see it change but understand that it will and it will do so without many of the old school fans like myself.
I have already begun the process with my kids. They have already begun looking out of state.

Yes, it’s changed but kids still get in. Both of mine did. Just have to work harder.

60% of Bama students are from out of state

Im sensing a movement to accept mediocre students who are good looking and big sports fans. Never thought we’d want to be FSU but here we are.

We're at a point where UF can be the largest overall university in the country and smart and qualified kids will be denied admission to go.

There is absolutely no shame in being denied admission to UF. It's a subjective system.

I also understand families not wanting to continue donating to their alma mater who just denied their highly competent son/daughter admission.

No, you don't "just have to work harder."

You have to tailor your application to entertain/impress the people reviewing it.

It's part academic, athletic, and test-scoring excellence, part dog-and-pony show. And that latter part gets a whole lot of undeserving weight in my opinion.

And even among the in-state students, they probably want students from all over the state, some inner cities, sub-burbs, rural, panhandle, the keys, etc.. A lot of applicants from one area are probably not going to get in over someone with similar credentials from an area with few applicants.

They receive 10s of thousands of applicants and they can’t review all by hand. Maybe they cull them down systematically but they accept thousands while sharp students get rejected. I expect individual analysis is required as its big deal who they accept/reject. How do they do it?? It would be fascinating to see the process.

is what it is. Most people just want their kids to share in the experience as a student that they had 20+ years ago. I encourage my kids to carve out their own experiences and a life for themselves. If it leads them To UF then cool, if it leads them elsewhere, then congratulate them and marvel as they grow. That’s the journey and the beauty. My oldest will likely end up at UF via Santa Fe but my 2 youngest likely go a different direction for different reasons.
